Kia Sportage - Winter wheels - Borderer

Just about to take delivery of a new Kia Sportage which will arrive with 225/60R17 alloy wheels.

My previous car was a Kia Venga and I have a set of winter tyres on rims from that. These are 195/65 R15 and have only done about 6500 miles so I am keen to reuse them on new car.

However, I am unsure as to whether or not 195/65 R15 wheels and tyres would be suitable for a Sportage. Advice needed please!

If they'll fit over the brakes, the gearing will be quite different. About halfway down this site gives you a calculator: www.carbibles.com/tyre_size_calculators.html

The smallest wheels fitted to new Sportage appears to be 16" with 215/70 x 16 tyres, obviously that needs checking, but a wheel size not approved by the maker won't go down well with insurance.

I doubt they will go over the brakes, let alone if offsets etc pair up.

A 225 60 17 has a static diameter of 701mm

A 195 65 15 has a static diameter of 635mm

That's a 66mm difference on diameter, the 15" wheel will lower the car 33mm and will substyatially lower the gearing and affect your speedo accuracy. It wil, also increase your fuel consumption.

Fitting these wheels could also affect the Kia warranty since they are not an approved size.

The 225 60 17 has a load rating of 99

The 195 65 15 has a load rating of 91

You should never fit tyres with a lower load rating than those fitted by the maufacturer, to do so could be dangerous and leave you liable to prosecution and without insurance should you have an accident.

Put the Venga whhels/tyres on e-bay of a Kia club site. Then buy 4 such as these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4x-17-Genuine-Kia-Sportage-Alloy-Wheels-Great-Condition-/171362761103?pt=UK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Trims_Car_Rims_ET&hash=item27e604398f and fit the correct size tyres to them.

You are spending a considerable amount on your new car, don't spoil it by fitting the wrong wheels/tyres.

The 215/70R16 mentioned by GB have within <1% the same diameter as the 225/60/R17, so look the right size.

The handbook probably covers the tyre options in terms of load/speed rating of homologated tyres for your model.

mytyres do wheel and tyre sets including winter tyres on steel rims. Between £100-£150 a wheel depending on what winter tyre you wnat fitted in that size.

I actually use some 16" steel wheels with Pirelli Scorpion STR all weather tyres, in winter instead of the far too fancy 18" alloys, on the Outlander. I got those from mytyres after checking with Mitsubishi that the wheel/tyre spec was OK.

The only nuance really was that they said 215/70R16 H rated were the homologated tyre, and all the winters were T rated. Rather than prolong the conversation with them, which they were clearly struggling with, I just opted for the all-season Pirellis which have been fine and have also worn very well.
