VW Polo 1.4 - 2001 - Brake Disc Recommendation - csgmart

Going to replace the discs and pads on my Polo soon due to wear.

GSF have 4 makes of disc available 2 of which I've heard of.

Pagid @ £15.90 (reduced from £22.50

Eicher Brakes @ £10.33

Textar @ £18.60

Bosch @ £19.14

Question - which one would you buy. I do about 10k miles a year, mainly motorway and fast A roads and obviously safety is paramount to me, but is the most expensive the better disc?

Also, pads - from the following which would you choose?

Pagid @ £16.37 (they also have Pagid listed at £19.14 for what seem to be the same item)

Eicher @ £11.33 (and another set listed @ £12.12)

Others from Textar, ATE and Bosch from £18+

Any of the above except Eicher.

Pagid are very good, made by TMD group as are Textar which often found as OE on premium German makes.

Before you buy though, suggest you nip onto ebay and check out e-parts-store shop, based in Cheltenham, they sell Mintex (TMD again) at excellent prices, 4 discs and 8 pads for my 3 litre Outback for £134 the lot free del, worked out about £50 cheaper than Pagid.

Fitted Eicher discs and pads to a family member's Honda CR-V auto - a car I have driven since several times - the discs and pads are fine. I agree that if you can get Pagid or Mintex for similar cash (or a small loading) then it would make sense. At the time I did the CR-V the Eicher discs and pads were half the price. Being a reasonably heavy auto with next to no engine braking the brakes take a pounding and have held up perfectly well.

There are regulations that set down standards for non OEM brake parts and whichever name you choose the differences in performance between them and OEM will be negligable regardless of cost

Google "regulation 90 (RCE 90)"

The cheapest items will be more than sufficient, if they were not they wouldnt be certified and on the market. The average driver in the average car is unlikely to notice any significant difference between makes but If you are happy paying more for something in the belief its superiour then go for it. What is important though is that you avoid buying from dubious sources...there are.lots of fakes about that dont meet any standards whatsoever.

Regardles.....Do not accept anything that comes in an unsealed box or one that doesnt carry the traceability numbers and Euromarket identifier, in our case E11.

Many years ago I bought some Moprod brand disc pads from Halfords. They faded to nothing whilst trying to slow a caravan down a Welsh hill road. Fortunately the handbrake (and grabbing second at around 50MPH) saved the day.

Hopefully, standards have improved since then.

I still avoid anything from that place!

Out of your list I have used Pagid and Bosch, both very good quality.

I have also used Brembo discs and pads and I would recommend these too.

I would consider Apec.Well used in the trade and they offer 24k or 24 months warranty.

Of the ones you list I'd go for Pagid, discs and pads.

Go on ebay and look for Premier Factors in Walsall, they do loads of makes including Mintex. Check out their Mintex prices.

Mintex and Pagid are two brands from TMD and are both used by OEMs everywhere.
I have Mintex discs and pads on my 260hp 9-3. Excellent even under stress.

What's the technical reason that one make of disc will be any better than another?

Good question.

I am looking forward to some equally good answers.

For my last couple of front disc changes I've used Brembo discs, which are good value and have a wear indicator in them.

Well recognised brand especially in motor sport.

For all of the changes I have done on my previous, and daughters' cars I have used "Partco" discs and pads from a local motor factors (where the staff leave dirty thumb prints on the receipts) and failed to notice any difference from the oem ones that they replaced. They fitted as well as the oem version, were marginally cheaper and could be bought on a Sunday morning.
