2007 Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDi 170bhp - Rear shock absorber replacement for 07 Kia Sorento - KiaFan

I have a weeping rear shock on my 07 Sorento, the dealer is quoting over £1000 to replace the pair as they are self levelling, is there a more economical solution anybody?

Thanks for the post - I've learnt about self-levelling dampers, now! Never to old to learn, eh? But I hadn't heard of them before... thank you.

They are expensive though.. three hundred quid each on e-Bay. Look simple enough to replace, though.

They always were expensive, Volvo 760 estates had them back in the dark ages, they were about £160 a a side then IIRC, but as you say they are *usually* an easy straighforward replacement just like an odinary shocker.

Incidentally due to the cost, some people replaced the self levellers with the standard shockers for the 740 estate version, but you had to change the springs to stronger 740 spec too, 760 springs were softer due to the support/subsidy effect of the self leveller.

Even @ £300 a side you've saved our OP a good wedge, assuming he doesn't mind bunging them on himself, once the part number is found he might find them cheaper elsewhere, i'd certainly send carparts4less an email and see what they can come up with.

Oddly enough i've spotted them on the back of our newly aquired but old as the hills Subaru Outback.

Years ago i replaced the self levelling on my SD1 with something called Load Leveller from Monroe (might have been Ride Leveller). It was a set of shocks and replacement springs and a valve system. When the car was loaded you simply pressurised the system from an air line to level it back up. I used a small 12v compressor. A simple and easy to use system that was very effective and way way cheaper than the original Nivomats.
