Daewoo Matiz - Heavy steering after hitting pothole? - charley93

Hi all,

I hit a pot hole quite hard a few days ago and at first everything seemed fine, however the last couple of times I have taken the car out, the steering feels very heavy, the same sort of feeling as when you are driving on a flat tyre, although the wheel I hit appears to be fine by looking.

Does anyone know what the problem is likely to be and if it's going to be expensive!!

Thanks

For safety's sake I suggest you also get a garage/tyre depot to check the tyre - I hit a deep pothole recently and a bump appeared on the sidewall about 5mm deep. I had it investigated and as the garage took the tyre off the rim, about 10cm of the sidewall just split off as it was invisibly damaged by the impact of the pothole. As you can appreciate, damaged tyres are more likely to suffer a blow out and that's the last thing you want in this weather! Anted

As Madf pointed out, there's quite a few components that could have been damaged. I'd say your first port of call is to have the tracking and tyre condition checked. If the tracking is out, have the car checked over thoroughly.

I once hit a kerb in one of my rally cars and bent the rack in the steering rack. Given the rack was about 20mm in diameter compared to about 10mm for a track rod I was quite surprised. Luckily the damage only prevented me turning left!! I could go straight or right perfectly. Had to take a creative route to work for a few days whilst waiting for a new rack.
