Paintwork - DA orbital sander - where to begin - flopper

I have a car looking worse for wear and think a bit of TLC on the paintwork will give me best price, I have air supply and have a 6" random orbital sander but thats it. I feel embarassed to ask, where do i start, the 6inch backing disc has a smooth face so what do i need next to stick sanding discs to, an adhesived 6" velcro pad?

many thanks

Hi,take your sander into your local machine mart ,the staff there are very helpfull and will tell you what you need and maybe how to do it .

There are lots of videos on you tube that show you how to prepare a car for painting.

Before you go anywhere near your car with a DA sander I suggest you go on a training course. Even so called professionals make a horlicks of it, with no experience its a 100% certainty you will wreck the paint and need a respray.

Put your sander on e-bay and do it the hard way, by hand. Look at the Meguiars range of products, Halfords sell them. Great products and far easier to get a result than it was years ago.

I agree with skidpan.

Buy some polish (or rubbing compound if it's really bad) and put some elbow grease into it!

Yes, you do realise that if you use abrasive paper then you're at stage 1 of many in preparation for a respray?

Better spend circa £50 on getting a valleter to "mop" it and see how it comes up.

To answer your original question, Professional DA air sanders are for use with self adhesive disks. Most good bodyshop suppliers should stock them.
