A selection of sites that offer to renew/replace your driving licence, charging fees over the top of of the DVLA's charges.

Note that the sites use colour and layout that mimics the DVLA and one even has the crown symbol.

This one charges a whopping £90!

Why does the DVLA allow this sort of thing to proliferate?

Its not a scam as the sites tell you what they are, or is the Post Office 'check and send' service also a scam?

On every one of those sites there is a prominent notice on the home page that they are not part of the DVLA and its a charge for a checking service and there is no need to pay for their service.

They also all have a link direct to the official DVLA site.

If people can't read they should probably not be allowed an internet connection.

Similar sites are around for passports, driving test bookings, travel visas, USA ESTAS.

The advice is to check you are on an official site, which for the uk is via gov.uk.

OK daveyjp, then could you please explain why the sites are similar in colour and layout to the dvla please? Just to pay homage to the dvla perhaps? Or for some other reason?

I am well aware that a lot of similar sites abound, a couple of driving test booking sites have recently been legally shut down after complaints.

To catch people who cannot be bothered to read all the imformation that is given,do not all government web sites in the UK end in .gov.

A few years ago I did some family history research and needed to buy some birth/death/marriage certs for various ancestors. Easy enough to sort on the .gov site, £7.50 each. Several other sites including the well known Ancestry.co.uk offered the same service at double the price. They were not a scam they just took advantage of peoples gullibility and lack of knowledge. In some instances its fair to say they we way easier to use than the .gov site which could be a little cumbersome at the time.

Perhaps these are aiming to cash in on those for whom English is not mother tongue.
