I though about buying a Dacia and spent some time reading through the UK Dacia forum and they seem a happy bunch. I test drove a Sandero and was quite impressed with the comfort and it wasn't unrefined. Most complaints seem to be about long delivery times and low trade in valuations (really what a surprise!) A few have rust issues from new but the dealers seem to be helpful in sorting them out.

For a new Sandero money you could be looking at a 4,5 or 6 year old Golf, Focus, Astra.

Re low trade in valuations. I traded in a 6 year old Citroen C1 for 3k. So for £2995 i drive a new Access. Some result.

My friend has a Dacia Sandero Ambiance 1.2 and it has clocked up over 4,000 miles in 5 months. I've personally driven the car over 1,000 of those miles.

The car is mechanically simple and has a basic interior but I see these as positive features as the car is spacious, comfortable, easy to keep clean and tidy and will be reliable and cheap to maintain. Build quality seems good and there have been no corrosion issues with the Sandero, only with the Indian-built Dusters. My friend's car has had no faults so far and seems to average 43mpg.

I've been driving for almost 40 years so I'm quite happy with a car that offers a slightly retro driving experience. In fact I enjoy driving the little car especially on West country lanes. It always feel safe and predictable. I'm sure you will find it an improvement over your current car. No doubt it would be noisy and pushed to its limit if used on the motorway at 80-90mph but that isn't my style or my need.

I recommend that you find the few hundred extra pounds to buy the Ambiance model as the extras provided are good value. Choose the diesel only if your mileage is high. Choose the 0.9 petrol turbo only if you really need a bit more perfomance and accept the potential for expensive repairs in the future.

My experience of trade-ins offered against Dacias is that they are very fair. I believe that the more basic Dacia models will hold their values well but the best policy will be to keep them until beyond economic repair.

Sandero and Logan MCV (Sandero estate) are the best of the Dacia range.

Lots of space for the money, and decent build quality.

Make sure you specify a spare wheel.

Dacia where doing full size spares including all the kit for £95 quid, which is cheap compared to rival manufacturers.

There's something somewhere on this site about the build quality of these cars.

Many thanks to the gentlemen who offered their advice Re.the Sandero. The car seems to meet my requirements i.e.an uncomplicated life pottering around the West Country lanes.( I live in Wells)

I contacted the local dealers in Trowbridge who tell me it is about a 3 momths delivery time & they hope to get some in February so I asked them to send a catalogue which I could test drive round the block but so far nothing has materialsied, whch makes me wonder what the after sales service is like.

Is 3 months a reasonable delivery time ,as after 66 years of driving I have never had a new vehicle except a Centurion tank which I had to hand back on getting demobbed.

My friend (living in Weston Super Mare) ordered her Sandero from City Motors in Bristol in March and was quoted 3 months delivery time. The salesman kept her well-informed whilst waiting for delivery which took place as expected in June.

The after-sales service varies from Renault/Dacia dealer to dealer. If you are not happy with the dealer in Trowbridge, Bristol is just about the same distance from you. You can order a brochure from the Dacia website and my experience is that it will be sent out quickly.

The Sandero is great for pottering around the lanes of Somerset.

In my opinion build quality matches that of your Centurion tank!

If a car is in demand, you normally have to place a factory order, and 12-16 weeks is quite normal for that.

15 weeks to build a DFS sofa, on the other hand, is excessive.

In my case waiting time was 6 weeks. Very impressive.

For the car, normal. but what is Avant doing buying a DFS sofa, did you specify the seat covers to match the Skoda. Personally after an experience with these people of two sofas breaking when we sat on them i'd rather have the skoda.

Oh and by the way Merry etc to all,,

Indeed DFS sofas don't last forever but that was the only place I could find one at a reasonable price where I can lie down comfortably with my head on the armrest.

Avant, i recommend these people...www.duresta.com/

Our 4 seater made about 10 years ago in Nottingham is as deep and comfy as a real bed, indeed it does make an excellent spare bed despite not being designed as such and the squab is so deep it can accomodate two in comfort...;)

Despite liking what Dacia are doing I have a big problem with the local Renault/Dacia/Peugeot dealer due to being foully sworn at by a neanderthal admin in a suit when i delivered Renault vans to them, unfortunately this has tainted my choice of Dacia despite my liking the Duster a lot, Renault and Pug wouldn't be considered anyway.

I could go elsewhere but the aftertaste is still there even after about 6 years...yes i know i should move on but when something like that happens i could not give my business to a company who would employ such a person, and that even reflects on the make, silly? maybe, but we are who we are....we went and looked at a Duster on the forecourt but those words came straight back and we left without contact.

In a way its my fault and i accept that, if i hadn't been so taken back by the verbal assault i should in hindsight have put the vehicles back on and delivered them to our local depot and allowed my company to deal with it, things like that were taken very seriously.

I should add, the reason he swore was that i didn't leave the keys in the unattended vans in the open rear compound, despite the obvious dangers of doing so (plus my job on the line if caught doing so), and he'd disappeared for an extended break so i had no idea when anyone would check them in.
