At that price, £1000, condition is everything.

Some on that list aren't that big/heavy - Toyota RAV4, Suzuki Grand Vitara and Honda CR-V.

You may have missed Kia Sorento

If you can find a sub £1,000 4x4 which passes a pre purchase MOT by an independent tester get your lottery numbers on tonight, because you will have hit lucky.

There's a LWB Shogun for sale near us, many many years old and it is up at £3,000.

You might be lucky with a hilux surf - I was offered one for about £1500 a little while back. Though it was a 2.4 - I suspect 3.0s go for more.

It might also be worth looking at the ford maverick/nissan terrano - they are pretty decent performers.

Not really helpful but I wish someone would make a car that looked like a big 4x4 but two wheel drive and lightweight.

Tall, big wheels and bigger tyres, big engine and maybe a plastic or fibreglass body.

I'm going

Being for sale at a particular price and actually achieving the said price are often two completely different things.

You missed off one of the best and real 4x4's there is.....Ssangyong Musso ( and variants under different badges).

You can buy one of those for about the amount you want to pay, Power trains are Mercedes designs built under license.

Like buying any used car, You'll have to do your homework and look around until you find a good one.

Jeep Grand Cherokee. That 4.0litre unit is one of the most durable things ever made, Americans love them and run them to over 300k without incident.

All the usual caveats about condition mattering most at this price point do apply, but I mention the Grand because most of them have never been used off road.

They are stunning towcars but most of them have been suburban school run cars or used for the odd bit of snow, unlike a Hilux which could be pretty battered by now.

Ill secong that about the grand chrokiee plus many of them have been converted to lpg.

Talking of LPG theres a nice looking Shogun LWB on ebay with the 3.0 litre petrol converted to LPG, good history low ownership around £1500, i'd give that more than a second glance.

Bag of sand for a proper 4x4 is really barely above scrap value.

I'm an LPG fan but worth checking tank size if buying one already converted, chap with a Cherokee fills up where i do, his car only does 100 miles between fills, the tank is too small, that would really annoy me.

Landrover do ! Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 2WD not very popular but drive extremley well & i achieved 53.7 mpg over a 370 mile drive

The only time it was noticable as 2WD was if you pulled away hard you could feel a little bit of tourque steer but otherwise i have to say very good for a 2WD

Im sure Ford also do a Kuga in 2WD version as well
