Mazda CX-5 - Buying New Car on Internet - Stripes
Hi all.
We are considering purchasing a Mazda on the Internet. I know there are a few companies out there.
Has anyone had any experience of buying a car this way. Could save nearly £3,000 compared to dealer. But a bit sceptical ?

HJ has some guidance on this on the main website. Check that vehicle is UK spec/sourced and will be new/first reg with you as first keeper.

Companies such as Drive the Deal act as an introducer and your transaction remains with the supplying UK franchise dealer.

Worth going to your local dealer and see how near they will go to matching the DtD price.

Thank you for your reply. We have seen a Company called UK Car Discount. Never done this before so very nervous spending £25k when we haven't seen the company. Any advice welcome.

The safe way will be to use a company that searches out the best deal for you and then introduces you to the dealer so that you only deal with and pay the dealer directly.

Personally I wouldn't be wanting to part with 25k without knowing who exactly I was dealing with.

Buying from brokers is safe providing you observe a few simple rules.

Do not buy from a broker that asks for any money before they put you in touch with a dealer.

Do not buy form a broker that asks for a deposit.

Do not buy from a broker that asks you to pay them for the car.

In all the above instances yoiur money is at risk.

A good broker will put you in touch with a dealer who you will then conclude the deal with and pay monies too. The broker will get his finders fee from the dealer when the car is delivered.

The 2 "good" brokers that spring to mind immediately are Drivethedeal and Carfile.net. They are rarely more expensive than the "risky" competition.

Except skidpan a deposit is paid to DTD! Pay deposit by credit card and you get the added protection you need.

It was not when I looked at buying from them in June and having looked at their web site just now its still not, here is what it says:

The deposit is usually £500, but may be more depending upon the specification of car ordered. The amount will be confirmed by telephone, prior to being taken, and you will be given the opportunity to agree it first. Please note that your deposit will be taken by the dealer supplying your new car and not by us.

The important bit is Please note that your deposit will be taken by the dealer supplying your new car and not by us.

So to repeat what I said earlier "do not pay a penny to the broker".

Thank u all for advice, but the Company we are looking to deal with is neither a broker, nor an introducer. We deal with the Company direct called UK Car Discount. We pay £1000 on credit card as deposit then the balance when we actually receive the car. Company established since 2003. Any advice very welcome. Thank you.

>> Any advice very welcome.

I'd advise you to compare their prices with someone like 'drive the deal' and ask if you're prepared to take the risk?

I repeat what I have said before, do not buy from a company that takes your money. Buy only from a broker that iintroduces you to a dealer. If you pay UK Cars and they do not pay the dealer you will have no money, no car and a court case, its happened before with brokers.

If you don't want to take the good advive given you by myself and others don't ask.

Thank you. Please bear with me as I've never had experience of buying a car like this, but I very much appreciate your advice.
So, we have found a broker called New Car Supply, they ask us to pay a deposit on credit card of £500 direct to them so we are protected by CC company, but said if we really don't wish to pay a deposit they will agree and go ahead with deal anyway.
We would pay the DEALER once the vehicle is at dealer, the Dealer would then deliver car. Does this sound ok to you?

Why will you not look at the prices the 2 brokers I have previously suggested have on offer.

Both these brokers are well established (carfile.com over 40 years) with well established dealers and they trade in a correct manner with no risk to the buyer.

One more question for you, what happenes if you have paid for your car and when it arrives it is not the correct spec or is damaged. They have your money and although you may get it back form the credit card company eventually you will have an argument.

I bought from carfile.com in June. Paid a £500 deposit to the dealer with Visa and the rest when I collected the car having checked it over. Exactly like buying directly from a dealer with no risk and a £3000 saving.

Normally if a deal loks too good to be true it is.

@ Stripes:

Skidpan has given you very good advice and advised you several times not to pay a deposit to the broker, suggesting two well known alternatives. Ignore at your peril.

You could also get a written quote from Drive The Deal and Carfile, and go and negotiate with your local Mazda dealer - see how close they can come. You can then decide on convenience vs. price.

Thank you all very much for your advice. We took it onboard. we contacted Cardfile but they weren't competitive. The safest option with a good price looked like Broadspeed, but you still had to pay a £1000 deposit direct to them. So we contacted several dealerships and managed to get a good deal, only a little bit more than Broadspeed and a sooner delivery date, so good result. Thank you all.

Well done, good result.

I tried Broadspeed (they appear to be another decent broker) when I bought but they were approx (from memory) £400 more than Carfile and Drivethedeal but on top of that they charge a £200 "introduction fee".

That would not be an issue if they were way cheaper (as you say they were in your case) but what happens if after being introduced you don't actually place an order, do you get it back.

I also tried getting local dealers to match or nearly match the on-line prices, it worked when I bought my BMW 1 series in 2008. In the case of the Seat Leon the closest they got was £1600.
