"Men understand cars" - Henry the 9th

A lady motorist recently recounted her experience as follows:

I visited a local car showroom. A salesman approached me and I told him that I was interested in a particular model. He said "Is your husband with you?" I said "No, why do you ask?" He replied "It would be better if he was...men understand cars". I walked out and purchased a vehicle elsewhere.

The word prejudice comes to mind !

I've yet to meet a lady who is as interested in cars as many of my male acquaintances. Perhaps they do their research behind closed doors. Mind you, our own pologirl evidently knows much more about them than I, and many others.

If Vicky B-H would like to give me a call...or is that missing the point too?

I'm lucky enough to know several. One of them has swapped her Boxter for a Ferrari !

We're expecting to go car shopping this weekend. Car is for my wife, so it will be interesting to see how the various dealers approach us. Wife is usually a faster driver than me and fancies 'something sporty', though I suspect that practicality will drive her final decision.

In this family - admittedly getting on now - the male is expected to buy, minimally maintain, and clean the cars, inside and out. The female may drive, fuel, act as keeper, and help to insure them; and even contribute to any purchasing discussions. Both of us attended car-maintenance courses, long ago when that was a realistic possibility. I am pretty sure that it is many years since the female opened the bonnet, though she still has a simple notion of what is underneath it. She does know how to call rescue services if required.

From my circle of friends it seems a fair generalisation that the average man is likely to be more interested in cars than the average woman. That salesman does seem to lack tact and common sense though.

And scratch below the surface and most car sales staff know very little about the product they are selling. Try buying a German marque and ask them what extras are available and how they can be mixed and matched, they won't have a clue.

+1 and then some!

Terribly sexist I agree.

However I heard a story a few years ago, that made me chuckle.

Lady goes into a car showroom and looks around at a new car.

Salesman sidles over and ask "can I help ?"

Lady says yes, what is the advantage with alloy wheels over steel wheels ?

Salesman replies, "dont worry your head, all you need to know Luv is they're better !"

Fortunately the weirdos masquerading as men in these stories won't be adding to the gene pool if this is the way they woo the women.

Car salesmen, probably:

Were previously employed as estate agents (failed).

Were previously employed as Halfords assistants (failed).

Were previously employed as shop assistants (failed).

Were previously employed as................. (insert your own).......

Consider this. What gender will turn up when this lady calls for road-side breakdown assistance. My money is on that it will be a bloke, and she will be really, really happy to see him.

WWheni was studying motor vehicle engineering at college it was all boys of ages 16-19 except fpr two girls out of 2 classes of 20 but ypu could be forgiven for thinking they were boys by the way they acted. They were interested in cars but most of my female friends including my wife dont really have a interest in cars except for one lady I work with who is a very competent hgv driver. She puts a lot of men to shame.

I just wonder how the 'lady motorists' in these stories found their way out of the kitchen in the first place.

I know a lot more about cars than most males of my acquaintance, particularly those around my age. A lot of younger people aren't interested; you can't do much in the way of repairs yourself nowadays anyway, as car manufacturers are making it hard enough just to change a headlamp. They just want something that will run, and probably look nice.

Then again, how many women are on the forum here?

I think the 'men know cars' idea is a bit lame in this day and age. I too would have marched straight out of that showroom.

It doesn't really apply as much now because frankly, most men under the age of 35 know foxtrot alpha about cars either.
