In this family - admittedly getting on now - the male is expected to buy, minimally maintain, and clean the cars, inside and out. The female may drive, fuel, act as keeper, and help to insure them; and even contribute to any purchasing discussions. Both of us attended car-maintenance courses, long ago when that was a realistic possibility. I am pretty sure that it is many years since the female opened the bonnet, though she still has a simple notion of what is underneath it. She does know how to call rescue services if required.
From my circle of friends it seems a fair generalisation that the average man is likely to be more interested in cars than the average woman. That salesman does seem to lack tact and common sense though.
