Tyre noise - john farrar
I see that new tyres now have a noise(dB) rating. Any views how this relates to noise in the car and are these ratings a bit like the official EU mpg figures, ie not a lot of use in the real world ?

Perhaps we should start a "real tyre noise" table!

These figure accurately reflect the noise impose on those OUTSIDE the car - but has no bearing on noise inside the car.

RT,

I realise that the rating is the noise outside the car, but I assumed that if they were quiet outside then there was a good chance that they would be quiet inside, but I have very limited experience as I do not change tyres that often.

My present set bought mainly for quiet running and smooth ride are rated @ 71db, they do both very well, so long as i can get 71 or below i'm happy.

It all depends what the road is surfaced with as to the overall noise from the tyres roads in the UK are rough compared with most roads in mainland Europe even the new concrete autobahns in Germany are smoother than most parts of the M1.When you also take the weight of the car and its suspension set up these figures are pretty meaningless a fact born out in this weeks Autobild.
