Nissan Micra K - wrong oil. help quick! - thecarwonderer

Hi,

I have a 2009 plate Nissan Micra DCI (diesel) 1.5 engine.

Today I put 15W-40 oil in my engine when my car showed up 'oil low'.

After doing this I found out that my car actually is recommended to have 10W-40 oil.

Will the wrong oil be okay? Am I causing damage to my car? What should I do?

Please help! Thankyou.

Yes;No;Nothing.

It'll depend more on whether the ACEA classification is correct than the cold viscosity - if the car needs ACEA-C3 and you put ACEA-A1 in, it could damage the cat and/or DPF.

Do you never check your oil level.

Cars rarely have an oil level light, it oil pressure. When that lights its usually too late and damage may have been done.

Pray that you have been lucky and read the manual about your warning lights and the correct oil to use. Its all in there.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Better add a bit of oil of the wrong spec than run low.

Very handy those dashboard oil level readings, so long as you have a proper dipstick to compare with.

As long as it was a low oil level warning light and not what many people assume the oil pressure warning light to be.

First time in 6 months from new that i've been present when the lorry cab was tilted this week (fuel filters needed unsheduled replacement), so took the opportunity to compare the dipstick level (needs cab tilted) with the in cab electronic reading, sure enough identical.

Still rather have a dipstick as well, nothing quite like being able to see feel and smell the oil for yourself.

You do not get a choice with a lot of cars electronic or nothing.

Now you're starting to think like a proper driver.....don't let your boss know how you feel.....

Agreed - and for automatic transmissions - in both cases a basic visual inspection of the oil/fluid can be done as well as checking more accurately the level.

On my engine dipstick I can judge whether it's on minimum / +0.25 /+0.5 / +0.75 / +1.0 litres above - the idiot light just "says" above / below minimum.
