Had to visit a Mercedes showroom this week to get new batteries for remote key fob. £9!!! Apparently a new key fob is over £200 which seems mouthwateringly expensive too. The showroom I visited was glitzy in the extreme, in a prime business park location and as a customer I was greeted by not one but two charming receptionists who actually seemed to have nothing to do. The techy guy was also polite and helpful. And I am sure the coffee and newspapers were excellent as well.

Got me thinking though. Why do we need this glitzy extravaganza on offer when we buy a car and then get it serviced? Has anyone got any information on how much of the service labour rate is for the fancy premises and overheads? Interesting to hear if anyone does.

Perhaps less glitz but more concentration on the technical expertise needed to understand and maintain a modern car is really all we need, not the dazzling display of conspicuous consumption attempting to make us feel that somehow we are celebs panting for attention, even though we've just gone to get the car fixed.

Rant over.

It is quite galling, isn't it?

You are after all paying for the "show".

I have noticed that even my local VW dealership went down this route.

So much for the people's car!

Sounds as though you must live in an upmarket neighbourhood :-) There would be little point in much glitz at a down-to-earth place where they have to fight for sales.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class W202 - Fancy car showrooms rant - Dave N

Well you bought a glitzy overpriced car just as a means of transport, when you could have gone for something lesser, as it's only 4 wheels and an engine to get you from A to B.

Yes I did didn't I. I bought a 7 year old C220 CDI Estate some 4 years ago. It was a really extravagant purchase in keeping with my pop star lifestyle and Caribbean holiday home so I suppose it serves me right.

Oh and the dealership I went to was in a pretty ordinary north Midlands town.

I expect alot goes on specialist tools and computer programmes to read the codes etc. to be fair Mercedes does offer a substantial discount on labour rates for older cars. Would be interesting to have a table of various makes main dealers hourly rates and cost of a selection of commonly needed parts.

I expect HJ's got it in his files somewhere.

Sounds like our midlands MB dealership, as you say two well presented (if you like layers of warpaint) receptionists and more suits busy doing nothing than you could shake a stick at.

Only thing missing was customers, i don't suppose the £16 i paid for a trim piece for the seat belt presenter would keep that glass palace going for long.

I disliked the parts dept 'experience' intently, long gone is the knowledgeable storeman in his smock behind a grubby counter, in the palace you are seated in front of a squeaky clean chap in a suit (of course) behind his equally pristine squeaky clean desk that has probably never seen a grubby part for pattern purposes.

Fortunately my visits to such places are few, this was the first time for about 4 years, my venerable MB indy who's premises are at the exact extreme opposite end of the spectrum, but then so are my bills and the knowledge and competence on offer are as old school as he is.

I'll forgo the tiles glass carpets coffee receptionists suits all with company cars, plus an operating theatre standard of workshops, all which i would otherwise be paying for and we haven't yet put a spanner on the car.

I have my cars serviced, MOT'ed and fixed at a local independent who employs 6 people. The receptionist there isn't covered in foundation and I suspect is a better lay than Mrs Middle Class at Mercedes too.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class W202 - Fancy car showrooms rant - anthonyf

Yes I forgot to mention I was the only customer and I was only buying 2 batteries for a key fob. I expect there was a lot of intricate car keyhole surgery going on behind the scenes.

I also use a local independent guy whose first name and mobile phone no I know. No waiting room although I have sat in his office waiting for him to produce an MOT certificate! He does offer a courtesy car which is neither new, glamorous or even particularly clean sometimes but he does know what he's talking about, he is the boss and I trust him. Oh and his labour rate is about 1/3 of that of the nearest MB main dealer. Long may such businesses thrive.

If he's good, put him in HJ's Good Garage Guide: he might get some more business this way.

Over the last twenty years or so most manufacturers' franchise networks have shaken out many of their traditional-style dealerships or subsumed them into national chains with 'glitzy' presentation. Every few years I take on another old Pug, and usually the dealer on its numberplate no longer exists. However I know of one notable exception - the franchise in Macclesfield is still in the hands of the family that started it 100 years ago, now in the fourth generation. So far they have avoided the 21st-century makeover. Long may it continue - but they are a dying breed.

So why did you go to the Merc main dealer to get overcharged on a battery for a keyfob, if you don't want to pay for the glitzy showroom and are a big fan of your independent mechanic?

Which North Midlands town was it?
Mercedes-Benz C-Class W202 - Fancy car showrooms rant - anthonyf

Because I happened to be away from home when the thing went flat.

I find Maplins an excellent place for button batteries.

Or even Boots, if a Maplin's isn't near.

I don't see what the problem is.
It's just the same as a premium hotel is also better than some sort of premier inn or even a room above a pub.

Some people appreciate the little touches like being greeted by one's name in the carpark, not being expected to queue while crowding other customers being served and eavesdropping their business, great coffee and your car brought to the door, and all this costs money.

Doesn't look as if anyone has an answer to my opening question then:

Has anyone got any information on how much of the service labour rate is for the fancy premises and overheads?

No problem - life goes on.

Taken from www.simoncgreen.co.uk/mercedes-benz-servicing.php

Typical Mercedes Benz main dealer hourly labour rate - £108

About half of it?
Who knows. I doubt even the accountant knows.
