Rush Hour Traffic - D13

Hi I am new to the Uk and was wondering how long would it take to drive from London Luton to edgware at 8.30am on a monday morning in july. Google maps estimates approx. 30 mins. However would I be hitting rush hour traffic on the M1?

Thanks

I'd advise taking the train.

TomTom route planner reckons 56 minutes. I'd agree the train would be much less stressful.

When in July?

English schools finish for summer between 19th and 26th. Will be a lot quieter once hols are under way. But I'd still use train/bus rather than drive.

If by London Luton you mean the airport it has a nearby station, Luton Airport Parkway. Not actually on the airport due to topography but linked by bus taking about 10mins.

I'm reasonably local to this area and would second the advice to use the train. Yes, you would be driving in the rush hour. Even out of term-time, the M1 is subject to unforeseen delays. It is sufficiently crowded for any quite minor incident to have a disproportionate effect. Even on a "good" day, Jct 10 to 9 will probably be slow, and again Jct 6 to 5.

The journey by train would be shuttle bus from the airport to Luton Airport Parkway station, First Capital Connect train to Mill Hill Broadway (you may have to change at St Albans), bus 221/240 to Edgware. About 54 mins, according to the TfL website.

Alternatively, if you drive, leave earlier if you can; if you're driving someone to the airport that should be possible. If you're arriving by plane that won't be possible, but leaving later (say, around 9:00, if by any chance (!) your flight is delayed) will actually mean the traffic will be significantly lighter.

This thread is a great example of one of the big causes of this country's poor productivity levels, not to mention quality of life in the south east.

My guess is that the journey being undertaken in July will take the same time as it would have done in 1913, 1813 and 1713.

25 years ago a relative lived in Dunstable, close to the M1 and had to commute to Watford. If he didn't leave by 6.30 he knew he was in for a long trip.
