VW Jetta - Discovered paintwork has been touched up - help ! - i the t

Hi, I'd be grateful for any advice/opinion on this please -

I purchased an 08 Jetta a couple of weeks ago from autosave.co.uk and havejust noticed that some of the paintwork on the driver door has been touched up.

my questions are -

a) should the dealer have told me about this ?

and

b) do they have any responsibility (either under warranty or trade description-wise) to sort it out.

thanks in advance

In a word - No!

You have bought a five year old car, it is up to you to check that you are happy with it before purchase, it's features and it's faults. The dealer has no responsibility to point out any minor indiscretions, nor any responsibility to fix paintwork blemishes that you present when you purchased the car.

It easy to say, but if you wanted a perfect fault free untouched car - you should have bought a brand new one.

thanks for the advice, I appreciate it !

However, do you think it might perhaps be considered differently due to the fact it was bought through an online dealer and therefore I couldn't see it on the photographs?

I guess when the car was delivered I should've spotted it on first inspection but it's easy to miss something like that if you're not in the right light....

I suppose you could get a screwdriver and chip it all off to put it back how it was before.

No 5 year old car will be without wear and tear - you can either buy them pre-prepared in which case there will be door chips, stone chips, light marks etc. or post-prepared where most dealers will get a smart repair process over the car which will involve touching in chips and stone chips, probably a machine polish to get light scratches out and maybe even blowing over the front and rear bumpers to get rid of any scuffs, stone chips and loading marks on the rear.

Unless the touching in has been done to a particularly low standard then I can't see much reason to complain - it is not a new car so you can't expect it to be like new. If it is of a low standard then you could ask them if they will pay for it to be repainted.

OK fair do's and thanks for the advice, I'll just put it down to experience then !

Not 100% sure about this Jetta yet though...

first diesel I've had and loving the petrol bill; last car was a 98 s40 getting a max of 20mpg. Now I'm getting 40 round town !!

Apart from that though, it looks a little boring and I'm not impressed with the cloth seats. Also not keen on the fact you have to press unlock twice to open the passenger doors. If I go out on my own and forget to unlock both doors in the first instance; if I have to then pick someone up I have to turn off the engine and use the electric key to open the passenger door which is irritating (and makes it look like you have locked yourself in!).

Never buy a car without seeing it and driving it first.

Unfortunately, Jetta's of this age are very dull and bland. Regarding the locking, this feature should be adjustable - check your handbook or consult a VW dealer - there should be a way of altering the settings so that one press unlocks all doors. Failing that there will be an interior button which you can use to let your passengers in. Read the handbook.

As others have said, you will have signed for the car to say you are happy when it was delivered so no comeback in law. If these touch-ups and blemishes bother you, and you plan to keep the car for a few years, get some quotes from local bodyshops and smart repairers and get the work done.

point taken,

The handbook is a bit confusing though as it seems to be for several models of Jetta but will have another look..

As for buying without seeing I was skeptical but the dealer came highly recommended and overall the service was pretty good...mind you the fog and reverse lights weren't working on delivery (another thing I didnt check till he'd gone) but the dealer didn't fuss about me taking it into a main dealer. Also there was a wheel nut missing (out of 5) on one wheel and they refunded me the money I spent on a set of them.. Autosave are a 'Christian car dealer that specialises in selling to the clergy' and despite the atrocities and corruptness of religion and the church in general I think this angle is meant to denote a more honest level of dealings !

I'm an antitheist and admit even I felt a little more secure buying online becuase of the Christian connection !

The two presses is allegedly a security feature or was described to me as such once. If you find yourself in a tricky position where you don't want all the doors open just yours to get in quickly then away leaving all the other doors locked could help. There will be a switch on the drivers door to unlock all the other locks so no need to switch off and use the remote. I quite like Jettas understated looks and decent boot.

Perhaps they forgot to do the exorcism.

"Also not keen on the fact you have to press unlock twice to open the passenger doors.

The central logic locking on VAG cars can easily be changed by the dealer or an independant specialist.

I thought the door locking was an anti heist device!

I'm still wondering how anyone would buy a 5-year-old car online and expect it to be unmarked on the basis of a few fuzzy pictures. As has been said, if the condition is important to you, you must do your own inspection before buying, and drive the car too, as it may turn out not to be what you wanted. Once you have signed up, the dealer will assume that you have accepted all evident faults. You can get hidden faults fixed, or those which develop inside the warranty period. Things visible to the naked eye - no, sorry.

I remember watching a TV documentray about a large national dealership and their central PDI workshops were touching up paintwork on nearly half of the new vehicles passing through.

When you see brand-new cars bouncing along on car transporters, I'd be very surprised if any cars get to dealers without a few chips ...

I've also seen new cars being driven at breakneck speeds round shipping terminals being loaded / offloaded on/ off those big car carrier vessels. The dust and gravel flies ...

That's why an increasing number of new vehicles have protective cladding fitted at the factory and not taken off until the PDI at the dealers.
