Too Fast - Speed Awareness Course - oldroverboy.

After 45 years got "caught" just at the limit of where 1 mph less would not have got a ticket on the motorway. Have been offered speed awareness course and accepted and booked it.

Most surprising thing is my Insurance co, to quote... "Thanks for telling us, no effect on your premium" and "actually no need to have told us" Have a nice day sir, anything else we can do for you today? No.. Then thank you for calling, Have a nice day.

A lot of insurance companies say, "Thanks for telling us, no effect on your current premium, but you will have to declare it when your renewal comes round"

IMO declaring a speed awareness course is like declaring being pulled over by the police to receive a warning/advice or admitting that you once ran a red light but no one noticed.....etc etc.....

The pupose of the course is to enable first time offenders to avoid the 3 points - and your insurance company need not be told.

The 'coppers' should have told you this

Oh yeah! I am not going to give them a chance to not pay out in future on any potential claim as time of call noted, name of person etc and with a minor change to policy effected at the same time they can't deny i told them. The great thing about our uk insurance companies is that they will do everything to avoid paying out, so be precise with them, and they will have no excuses.

Sure I read somewhere that one company, possibly part of the Admiral/Heffalump group, were now loading premiums for those attending a SAC.

If you've been caught speeding and have avoided prosecution or FP by taking a course then that is likely to be a 'relevant fact' for insurance purposes. No sensible Copper would second guess the insurance company's line and give advice suggested above,

I don't see that it's a "material fact" that has to be disclosed even if they don't ask the question - it's not really any different to being stopped and getting a "bo******ng" by a traffic officer and then allowed to go on your way, in neither case is a conviction or endorsement obtained.

Of course, at renewal time, the insurers may start asking the question "Any accidents, claims, convictions or speed awareness courses" - if they do, it must be answered accurately.

To take a ridiculous parallel, a few years back I got a NIP for speeding past a camera, which I was, but they screwed up so much information like the time and speed limit they quietly dropped the case - should I report that to my insurers ?

Different case. Taking a course is an admission of liability. I'm not saying failure to disclose would necessarily buy you trouble but it's not a chance I'd want to take.

If they use that as an excuse to not pay out - they are breaking the law. I have been to one of these courses and asked the 'tutor'

The "tutor's" opinion is worth even less than a serving police officer as they have no specific qualifications or standards

I have recently been on and we were told at the end of the course that if the insurance company don't ask dont tell them, if they do ask you must tell them. Going on what is a very interesting and enjoyable course was time well spent and no conviction or points on ones license.

Under EU Rules on minimum motor insurance standards across all member states, insurers can't refuse to pay out to third parties in such an event, but they can pursue you for the additional premium you would normally have paid.

For damage to your own vehicle, failure to disclose would not affect your claim against a third party who was at fault.

It is when you want to claim for your own losses from your own insurer that you may have trouble.

So, did the "course"

Own opinion? 4 hours was 3 hours too long for what they told/taught us, but some of the excuses were funny, "playing beat the sat-nav" going uphill (44 tonner hgv)

"Tutors" not judging, not talking about the law, just giving a few tips on how to spot hazards and speed limits.
