Peugeot 306 1.9 TDi - Smoley diesel & lumpy tickover when cold. - 602

Hi,

I've just bought a Peugeot 306 1.9 TDi, which is in surprisingly good condition. I drove it 80 miles to home, enjoyable, but maybe just a little lacking on grunt on hills. I guestimate it used about 2 gallons.

But on starting up the following day, lots of smoke and really lumpy tickover, but smoothed out when revs lifted slightly. I was only moving it to a fresh parking place, so don't know how long it would have taken for the smoke to clear.

Any**eas?

Check all 4 glow plugs for continuity to earth, should be about 1 ohm if good. Also check you have 10 to 11 volts on them immediately after turning on the ignition.

Check the valve clearances ( adjusted with shims ), after high miles they close up causing loss of compression.

The 10-11 volts is a good indicator, if its nearer 12v you have one or more failed plugs.

Using two gallons of diesel to do 80 miles I would be looking to replace the air filter element, that could also account for the lack of grunt.

Check the simple things first.
