Peugeot 207cc 1.6 GT. - Rear fog lights - Davrob10

I've just purchased a 2008 example of this car. Generally I am very pleased with it. It is in excellent condition (28k) and came with 12 months MOT dated the day I picked up the car, 22 March 2013. So I assumed all the basics were ok. On getting the car home however, I noticed the drivers side rear lamp cluster was misted. Believing it to be just condensation I took it off to clear it with a hairdryer but found it was filled with about 3 inches of water! The bulb holder was severely corroded and the bulb itself was seized in the socket due to this. I tried the lamps and neither of them worked, even the good one. I cleaned as much corrosion as I could and fitted 2 new bulbs but still no joy. I then assumed it may be the fuse but Peugeot don't list a fuse for the foglights (the fronts are ok by the way)

I have been in touch with the dealer and arranged to take it back next Tuesday for repair. However, as the car was awarded an MOT despite a glaring (or in this case non-glaring!) fault I am a little suspicious and I would be grateful for any information that I could muster so that I can be sure as much as possible that the job hasn't been botched.

Much appreciate any help possible. Thanks

My question is, what could have caused the other light to stop working as well, especially as there is seemingly no fuse dedicated to the circuit? Is there any other component that could wipe out the whole fog light circuit (I always thought the two were on separate circuits so that you always had one working)? The lense too is toast as once cleared of the mist it was plain that the reflective surface of the foglight compartment was stained brown by the water which must have been in there for quite a long time.

I also have a question about how it passed the MOT but I guess I'll have to find that out for myself!

Thanks a lot.

My question is, what could have caused the other light to stop working as well

An obvious candidate would be that there's a common earth, which is on the side affected by the water.

It'll have passed an MOT via the usual process of the dealer ringing his tame MOT bloke. I know of one case where a young lady was sold a total deathtrap by a dealer who washed his hands of the thing. She got everything fixed by the garage whose name was on the MOT certificate, via the simple expedient of threatening to drop a word in the shell-like of the Police and VOSA.......

The lighting system on these works in a very weird way due to the complexity of the electronic switching by modules.A fault in one light can affect the operation of others. Also it may only have one rear fog lamp ,on the right side.Check operation of the brake lights,as brake switch is a common failing on these.hth

Thanks. The 207 does have two rear foglights as my previous car was a 207 hatchback. I never had a problem with that with regard to the lights except the very one you mention! I had it from new and on the morning of its first MOT, on checking around the car for obvious problems, the brake lights weren't working! (Sod's law in action) But I have a good relationship with my local Peugeot dealer in Widnes (not sure if I can advertise!) and they took it in there and then and fitted a modified switch. I still made the MOT appointment! It passed.

I do wonder, in light of what you say about the complexity of the system, if the dealers workshop will have the necessary expertise to solve the problem.

Thanks again

Thanks. Regarding the MOT, just as I suspected! If the MOT was actually gained in the way you say in this case it beggars belief that any self-respecting business could do such a thing. I've made a big issue of the MOT business in my communications with the dealer and the car is going back there on Tuesday for repair.

Thanks again.
