Volkswagen Golf - Golf Engine - I am Scared - offshore

Hi,

I dont know anything about cars.

I just want to drive them, not breakdown, and not have lots of expensive repair bills.

I am tempted to buy a Golf MK 7 (because it has won ECOTY), with the intention of keeping it for apporox 10 years - if I live that long.

BUT - I have looked on the internet and keep seeing problems with the golf engines.

I would like to keep it past warranty. Which engines shopuld I avoid please - and which are the most reliable. OR - could anybody suggest other sites to look at that discuss this issue?

Thanks very much.

If reliability is an issue buy a Toyota.

The facelifted Auris looks a nice motor and you will get a five year warranty. Toyota are also very good at contributing to repairs outside of warranty if you have a full dealer service history.

You can also extend the Toyota warranty up to 7 years and the extended warranty is one of the best out there. Toyota are very good at supporting their customers.

Can't argue with either of the above, VW would be one of the last makes i'd consider out of warranty unless an older PD Diesel.

Ditto.

VW reliability is an excellent example of the power of marketing. A perception that they have built up remarkably well over very many years.

Seems like I fell for the marketing!!!!

Silly me.

Thanks for the advice on this.

VW are over-rated.

Avoid unless you like paying for a mystery reputation.

Lots of scare stories abound with the small 1.2 and 1.4 petrol engines. Various scare stories also abound about the 2.0 diesels.

However, the 2 litre turbo in the GTi is supposedly a half decent engine isn't it? I would like to think so as my Mk6 GTi has been faultless in the near 4 years I've had it from new. I intend to keep this another few years yet as it's a fantastic car.

Having said that, if I expressly wanted a car for 10 years and was buying purely for reliability, I would be buying Japanese too.

Mk1 and 2 Golfs were bomb-proof - IIIs were okay, then it's been downhill ever since. As others have said - buy a Toyota.

My Yaris 1.4D4D is 10 years old. All original. Utterly reliable.

Son's 1.0 Yaris is 11 years old: original exhaust replaced last year , still on original battery, 120k miles. Commtes 38 miles/day. Utterly relaible.

I'm currently running my father's old Toyota Corolla, 51 plate, only has 30,000ish miles on but still goes well, not bad for a motor used for a few miles here n there for so long.

Plus one for Toyota from me.......

because it has won ECOTY

Yes, because the most important consideration when purchasing a new car is that its manufacturer has lavishly wined and dined the right journalists.

If you really are planning to keep your new car that long, Vauxhall's lifetime warranty becomes awfully tempting. They're banking on the first owner flogging it after three or so and you can take advantage here. Any car can go horribly wrong if you are unlucky. The secret is to make sure that it's somebody else's problem.....

Yes, the latest Astra is a decent car. I went to the launch at Millbrook proving ground and had the chance to drive them back to back with a Golf, 308, Focus (old shape), and was impressed with build quality and refinement.

Loads of engines to choose from but avoid the non turbo 1.4 and the basic 1.6 petrols.

Lifetime warranty would be worth considering for your circumstances. Otherwise go Japanese or Korean - new Hyundai i30 and Kia Cee'd are good cars in their own right and come with long warranties.
