Vauxhall Corsa - Connecting Rod in engine -‘69 Vauxhall Corsa - vsseym
Hi All

Just a quick one - I brought a new pre reg ‘69 plate in April 2020. It has been serviced and MOT when it should be, the one one being beginning of March 2025. This week the engine light came on and before I knew where I was there was an almighty bang, smoke and a big puddle of oil. Garage has said the connecting rod has gone through the engine/sump. Basically it’s a new engine… if I can find anyone to do it.

Now my questions are:
-should a connecting rod go on a 5 year old car?
-should the garage have picked anything up on the service/mot back in March? They did write on the paperwork whining noise heard - suspect auxiliary belt pulley. Needs further investigation.
They didn’t tell me this just wrote it on the MOT paperwork and handed it back to me. Stupidly I didn’t read it and just assumed all ok and it had passed

Thanks

Vicky

A connecting rod should and is not expected to be a consumable item. 5 years or 15 years. It's a catastrophic failure, is there a reason? Lack of oil perhaps?

Is the full service history all with Vauxhall? If so there’s an outside chance you might get a goodwill contribution from Vauxhall.

Other than that in answer to your other points-

no, a conrod should last the life of a car but proving it was a manufacturing fault would be tricky especially if it’s not been maintained by a Vauxhall dealer. Hence the goodwill point above. It’s worth an search online to see if this is known issue.

whether the noise related to the conrod is now impossible to say for sure. Did you have it investigated? If not it’s it’s too late to do so. As you say they did write it down so the time to query it was at that point.

Finding someone reliable to source and fit an engine is going to be costly but don’t be tempted by anyone providing and fitting on the cheap. Use a reputable garage.

Finally few five year old cars are unsaleable and you may find someone willing buy the car “as is” but the price is likely to be low.

Sadly seems to be a known issue with these . It usually starts with piston failure and consequent damage to the conrods . Second hand engine may be the best option, but you could be buying the same trouble.

This seems more a topic for Technical rather than Discussion. You cant argue with a conrod.

Would expect any warning noise to be more of a knocking sound than a "whine", though if it was out of oil it might screech a bit.

You might be able to get some clues as to cause by a post mortem examination - are the other big end bearings worn or loose, or any signs of valve impact with the pistons, for example, but the only obvious point of that would be to attempt to assign blame to the servicing dealer (not checking the oil being the most likely blameworthy cause) which is unlikely to happen, especially if you get them to do the PM.

IIRC some Corsa engines have a problem, sometimes oil related causing cam chain wear/skipping so they go out of phase, sometimes snapping the camshaft. IF this involved valve-piston intimacy the transmitted force from that impact might also bust a conrod.

1.0 Turbo perchance?

1.0 Turbo perchance?

Apparently so!

The OP states it's been regularly serviced, but did they change the oil and filter each time? e &a/c says it's usually associated with piston damage - has the oil been regularly checked?

The OP states it's been regularly serviced, but did they change the oil and filter each time?

And if so, was the drain plug fully tightened ? :-)

It’s well known as a fragile engine. Wife’s friend came back from holiday and found her 2015 36,000 mile Corsa 1.0 Turbo with full history wouldn’t start. Outcome was that the engine was knackered. I wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole.

Are we sure it's the 1.0? I thought that engine had been replaced by the 1.2 by '69 reg. Unless this pre-reg was getting rid of some old stock.

How many miles had it done and if the servicing was not main dealer, can we be sure the correct oil had been used?

OP states it’s a 1.0 engine .

Yes, I read that.

According to this site, the 1.0 finished in September 2018.

**To Edit**

-Apologise it was a 1.2 (not a turbo)
-It was regularly serviced but not by Vauxhall. Oil was changed.
-Oil was checked fairly regularly and the oil light never came on

Look like it’s a new car for me. Any recommendations? Similar size as a Corsa. Looking at pre reg with not too many miles

Thanks

The 1.2 4 cylinder engine is generally a very robust motor , so I really can’t think what’s happened here .. perhaps the rattle at the front belt area was associated with the chain drive system and oil pump . Unfortunately, you’ll never know.

"The 1.2 4 cylinder engine is generally a very robust motor"

If the OP's Corsa is the current shape, I think the 1.2 would be a Puretech.

First bit of advice would be not to buy anything fitted with Peugeots 3cyl 1.2 Puretec wet belt motor. So no Vauxhall’s, Peugeot’s or Citroens with a 1.2 motor after 2018. It’s likely belt failure has caused this if it’s the Puretec.

I suggest starting a new thread specifically about recommendations for a new car. Provide a budget and a rough postcode area and some helpful members will hopefully see what is available locally. Then I will move this thread to Technical where it probably sits best.

The OP may start a new thread, but the answer will be a Yaris.
