Renault Modus - Insurance - is it worth claiming? - rustonboy

My daughter's car (2010 Renault Modus with 90,000 miles in very good condition) has been scratched by another car - she got the details. If she makes a claim against the other driver's insurance, I am concerned it might affect her insurance premium when she renews, as she will been "involved in an accident" (however minor, and not her fault). Please can anyone offer advice on this? Many thanks.

Under the terms of the Insurance Policy, she is obliged to report the event to her Insurer, and, if not, there is a danger that the other party will report the incident to their own insurer with, perhaps, some embellishment of the facts. Tell her to report it.

I certainly wouldn’t make any claim. They may write it off as the car is 15 years old.

Of course, reporting the incident and making a claim are two separate actions.

What's the excess? If its say 500 quid and the scratch repair is less than that , then no it's not worth claiming. Need more info.

If its a minor ding I'd just move on. A 15 year old car isn't going to last forever and the insurance company will probably write it off to get the case closed asap.

A write-off is pretty likely at 15 years old. A rear door of SWMBO's 2008 Pug 207 was dented by a reversing motorist in March. Insured value was estimated at £1350 so the car was written off without question. We chose to keep the car (and repair - our choice) and got a reduced payout of £850 - which exactly covered the repair at our local bodyshop.

I would definitely suggest following that route if you want to keep the car. Much less hassle than finding another, and you don't have to repair unless you want to.

Thank you all for comments and advice. It's not a big scratch (rear passenger door) and there is no dent. The other driver has offered up to £200 cash to settle without going through insurance. His excess is bound to be more than that, so that would obviously suit him My daughter is keen to get a quote from a local garage tomorrow, and will decide then (v. proud of her car). My concern is that, if she makes a claim, it could affect her own insurance premium. If she chooses to have a professional job done, the car might well be written off, in which case she could keep the car and get some money. However, that does seem pretty underhand as the other driver (ordinary, polite, sorry person) would lose his NCB and in reality the scratch is not so bad. If it was me, I would be happy with £200 cash, and buy a touch-up pen! I will report back on the quote she gets.

It sounds as if the damage is superficial and not worth claiming (tho you should make this position clear to your insurers). Go to any local bodyshop and get a quick guesstimate for cost. Or you could try one of the mobile dents-away people who come to your place. All the better if the third party is prepared to cough up.

But don't forget that owning and using a car has costs which sometimes have to come out of your pocket, not your insurer's :-)
