Kia Picanto - A bit of a tight situation - Engineer Andy

A news story just came my way that I thought migth both anger, amuse and puzzle at the same time (here it is in non-paywalled version on the Beeb):

A literal 'hold my beer' (the yoof driving it was arrested for drink driving). Apparently it is quite wedged in there. I wonder if letting down the tyres will help free it up enough for it to be *somehow* craned out?

Ah the Francis. I know it well. I had a casual job there as a student long ago. The road layout is a square (Queen's Square), he must have been going at a good rate to end up there. Given the car will be written off, a sling should do the job.

Knowing Bath, (a) I'm surprised he got up enough speed in the traffic to get through the railing (b) that was probably the only remaining parking spot.

Agree it's likely a write-off, my guess is they'll cut the roof off first and then remove driver's side wheels to reduce damage to building when lifting as well as lightening the load.

More likely attach strops to the two accessible wheels and then lift it out - it went in that way!

I want to see the James Bond appoach favoured by Col Jack O'Neill for SG-1: a big magnet!

It's out! Straight on to the back of a truck with a hiab and a couple of strops.

30+ years ago a car did a similar thing to an office I was working at in St Andrews Sq, Edinburgh

Listed building, iron railings, a bigger car = more damage - demolished the railings, broke the stone edging that held up the iron railings. The car was hanging half in the basement void and the rear end pointing skywards Car taken away quickly - a wreck.

It took a few months to get the edging stone replaced and the damaged stone of the building re-finished. Then there was the problem of getting copies of 200+ year old railings - B&Q did not stock iron railings - that took time.

4/5 months later you couldn't tell where the damage was.

Middle aged drunk driver, fined & banned.

Office is now a small "posh hotel".
