VAT reduces from 19% to 16%

9000 euros (6 govt and 3 manufacturers) for cars over 40k euros

6000 euros (similar ratio) for cars under 40k euros

Only electric cars and hybrids included & must emit less than 95grams of CO2

That probably means only plug in hybrids included

Nothing for normal petrol / diesel cars beyond VAT reduction

Not quite right.

Firstly, the reduction in VAT is across the board, not just car purchases.

Secondly, it is not a scrappage system as there is no need to hand a car in.

For electric cars, the support is €9,000 for cars with a list price up to €40,000. Above that figure it reduces to €7,500 with a cutoff at €65,000. Plug in hybrds are supported by €6,750 and €5,625 in the same way. There are also benefits for road tax (zero) and support for installing a charging point.

I apologise for any errors in my original post

Any idea what the cost of the cheapest electric car will be in Germany when you factor in all the incentives?

A Renault Zoe is at the €20,000 mark and the cheapest VW ID3 will also be at that price. A downside is that due to the green surcharge we pay around 30 pence/kWh.

Subsidies like this don’t work as far as the tax payer and the customer are concerned. All they do is force prices up. During the last UK scrappage scheme prices went up on average by £1,000 on superminis almost as soon as it was introduced.

I was at the time looking at cars for my parents who wished to trade an elderly C Class Merc that was worth about £1,000 in for that £2,000 allowance and get a new supermini. We shortlisted a few and went shopping but Ford had put the Fiesta up by £1,000 so that was ruled out, the Polo was about to be replaced and the old car was dated. We ended up with a Jazz but within weeks the price had gone up by almost £1,000. They did add TCS but for 99.99% of Jazz owners that was irrelevant and it would’ve cost Honda peanuts to add.

State subsidy never helps anyone bar the businesses who will happily lap it up.

Scrappage schemes also rob us of many classics and future classics. There are some videos on YouTube of people touring the airfields where cars were stored after the last scheme. What we've lost would make any car enthusiast weep.
