I thought it was just the Vauxhall dealership network that was being slimmed down (my local one just 'closed' and converted to a second-hand dealership and Vauxhal servicing agent) following the sale to PSA.

No surprise and fits with a thread I was going to start about how times have changed for car buying habits.

Our local paper has a feature every few days of old photos. Today was the early 1980s and every photo that has vehicles is dominated by Fords.

One photo shows about 10 cars and all but one is a Ford. Cortinas, Granadas, Escorts, Capris. The other car is a Datsun!

Now you take a photo with ten cars shown and you you could have ten different marques.

Just thinking of our street of ten houses, only one has a Ford and its a 15 year old Fiesta.

New car sales have fallen for the last 4 years.

Private buyers may still go into a showroom and order from the dealer. But a large number will identify the car they want and buy on-line through a broker. I'm not sure whether dealers have the authority to negotiate fleet sales - or do they effeectively hand over to head office.

Cars also have far fewer scheduled services, and although there are occasional lemons, typically cars are much more reliable than a few decades ago. So there are less opportunities to build customer loyalty and upsell when they next come to change.

There may also be a number of other factors at play - eg:

  • do many people increasingly regard cars a expensive "white goods"
  • will EVs soon outsell ICE, existing large companies may not be dominant

And finally, compared to the brokers, it is very expensive to run a showroom - staff, building, cars, insurance etc etc.

So closure of dealers, sad though it is, comes as no great surprise.

If you order a car via a broker, in all probability it will come from a franchises dealer. A dealer that has accepted they will make practically nothing on the car itself, but it’s a registration to attract bonus from the manufacturer.
It’s a bit misleading stating that Ford are closing down 200 businesses, simply because they don’t own any of them. They may be withdrawing franchises, but that’s not closing down companies.

I was under the impression that Ford did buy a lot of dealerships in the 90's, so it did occur to me that this latest could be ford dumping privately owned dealerships in favour of their outlets that they own.

Then they would have the dealer discount that they give away to the private dealerships, to themselves!

They do own the Trust Ford group, but that’s a long way short of 200 sites.

Ford have a limited future compared to the past, short lived turbo petrol small capacity units, timing belts bathed in oil letting go well before the change interval, 85k miles I heard about this week that an Ecoboost unit did suffer a failed belt and of course failed engine.

Why would anyone consider these doing a fair amount of miles especially when Toyota hybrids are doing 400k miles with just servicing? These engines only appeal to the very short term PCP three year and get rid brigade, but are these PCP 'professionals' not going German for their vehicles? So what buyer is Ford left with?

Decline of Fords

1) They sell lots & lots to Hertz, Avis etc etc

This means in a few months loads selling as 6mth 9K miles @ huge drop from List from Motorpoint & other supermarkets. I went into the local Ford with a neighbour - salesman denied he knew it was an ex day rent car - "They come from Ford Direct" we know nothing about them

2) List Prices are unrealistic as they discount heavily to fleets

3) Big Discounts for the man in the street available from Brokers

4) Quality is not there compared to other makes-Toyota, Honda etc

5) Ford Premium Ghia in the past, Vignale currently are but badges on cars - car is still the same.

6) Too many variations on the same car to increase production costs- even modest cars 3/4 engines and 2 or more outputs from 1 engine alone, many trim levels, options,.

7) Ford walk away from their problems -e.g. 3 cyl engines, powershift gearboxes - OK they have helped some with engines BUT TOO LATE the punters that were burned will not buy a Ford again.

8) Ford offering not up with the best

Edge was rubbish from day 1, KA was old old Ford parts in an uninspiring body, Mondeo good but a dying market & their Hybrid very poor compared to other makes, Fiesta expensive for what it is. New Puma is out but will the quality be there - we have to wait & see - with other makes you can be more certain of the reliability.

I have had about 6/7 new Fords in my 53 years of car owning / running - some OK a few bad.

I suspect that claims of Ford's likely demise are premature.

We had an OK Ford dealership until the early 90's when they couldn't build a new glass palace on their site and the franchise went to a competitor with absolutely no care for customer service and the "I'll have to speak to the manager sales technique" which I thought went out with the Ark!?
