Do patrol vans in the U.K. carry speed guns? - Arron Lowley
Was out early ours yesterday and there was what I thought to be a car behind me, it was quite some distance back, I booted the car to get home a bit quicker and j slowed down to do a U Turn at the roundabout and it turned out to be a police van, they didn’t attempt to pull me or anything and carried on going, this was like 3am and it was a normal patrol van, do they carry speed guns? I was doing quite a bit over the 70 limit.

Wait approximately 3 weeks...

They don't need a speedgun-a calibrated speedometer or Vascar wil do.

Highly unlikely, these things are heavily regulated. Some vehicles are equipped with speed detection systems, I would expect these to have two people aboard. However there can be roadside detection vehicles stopped anywhere .... as already stated, wait 3 weeks!

There were deffo no camera vans about as I’d previously been down both sides numerous times over the last hour before, I don’t know how many people were in the van.

But as I say they had no intention of stopping me and they were quite some distance back so they most likely weren’t even interested in what I was doing.

If they weren’t dedicated speed camera cops, they might have observed your speed, decided your driving was safe, and ignored you. Or maybe it was near the end of their shift ...

You wouldn't have been outpacing the several plod vans going south on the M6 early hours thismorning on full blues, probably heading down to help control the revolting remainiacs :-)

Unless you were driving like a complete fool (not necessarily speed associated), i suspect they had more important things in mind than pay you the slightest notice.

Wasn’t the m6 mate lol it was a dual carriageway in Bradford, the road was pretty much dead.

That comment is insulting, even if with a smiley.

If things go wrong, will you be paying my mortgage?

A police van is unlikely to have either a calibrated speedo or VASCAR - I reckon you have nothing to worry about.

Unless the law has changed two police officers working together can use their experience and give an opinion of the speed of a vehicle. It’s probably rarely used nowadays but the option is there.

Begs the question why was the OP deliberately speeding repeatedly up and down both sides of a city dual carriageway at 3 am??!

Surely that can't used at all these days, in this zero tolerance mentality you can't rely on two plod to decided you were doing 61mph or 73mph by their 'experience'?

That would be for the courts to decide - I see no reason why it wouldn't still be available at non-marginal speeds, eg 70 in a 30 limit.

Probably thought, oh what a pleasant change at 3am with minimal traffic about how nice not to crawl along in a stream of traffic all trying to stick to 30. Ok a bit tongue in cheek if you were exceeding 70 in a 30 limit

I was data logging my car to check for things such as misfires etc and boost levels, only reason I was driving so fast, and also why I was doing it so early In the morning to minimalise the chance
of any accidents. Wasn’t In the city itself, was outside of the city going towards the country roads
