SEAT Leon - Autoglym paint protection - offshore

In brief, is it worth paying for Autoglym paint protection service (around £300) for a new car on delivery?

Is the process something I could do myself, or is it something more technical than that - I have no idea to be honest.

Thanks

Ask the dealer to show you a new car that has been treated and compare it with one that hasn't. Can you tell the difference?

I polished and waxed mine three years ago, thought about doing it again, but haven't bothered and I very much doubt if an ex-hire car had expensive treatment.

I suggest you wait a year or so until the paint's fully hardened and then polish and wax it.

Probably not Autoglyms packages (i haven't looked though), but you can buy the other makes of protection regularly offered for really very little from the usual auction sites, and it's simple DIY.

Personally i wouldn't bother, instead build a decent layer of quality wax up on the paint over the course of a few applications, a large tub of even the most expensive of which will cost around 20% maximum of what the dealer wants and last years.

If i wanted to spend more and prefer a pro to do it, i'd speak to a recommended detailer/valeter and see what they advise and offer.

2 polishes a year (if I am feeling kind) using Meguiars Gold Class polish. After 5 years (8 in the case of the Micra) there are no better looking cars at their age.

Doing the Superb tomorrow, too hot today.

Personally I would say it's not worth it UNLESS the car's paintwork is properly prepared first. Most dealers do not know how to do this.

If you can spare 9 minutes of your life it might be worth watching the Youtube video below showing the paintwork issues that many new cars are left with after they have been 'prepared' by the dealer. I have no connection with the professional car detailer in this video but I've watched loads of his videos and understand the issues caused by dealers not preparing a new car properly. If you go to the expense of having a paint protection applied on top of a poorly prepared car you will never see the full benefits of the paintwork protection.

I recently had a new car prepared by a specialist detailer and then coated with a ceramic protection and finally a water repellent. It cost me £800 for the work but the results are astounding.

One final thing - if you go to the bother and cost of getting paint protection applied be prepared to use the right techniques when washing the car. Automatic car washes simply introduce scratches to a car. I would advise against using the hand car wash empires run by Easten European chaps (nothing against them personally) for the same reason - they WILL scratch your car.

Since having my car treated I have invested in a new pressure washer and two buckets (Google the 2 bucket car wash) and various other shampoos and treatments. If you don't plan on washing your car 'properly' I would save your money because it'll be £300 down the drain.

Paint protection is nothing more than a salesmans commission generator.

If it protected cars from car park scratches everyone would use it, it doens't!

Decent polish is cheap enough if you have the time and inclination to use it.

Thanks for the advice on this - I think it has saved me some money.

A bit of elbow grease is obviously required from yours truly, after a trip to Halfords.

Thanks again.
