............... and a €200,000 fine to boot, even when the guilty party agreed to co-operate and get a plea-bargain.

Well done to the US courts, (assuming he hasn't taken a bullet for VW) . In the UK, he'd have had his case dropped for lack of evidence and given a promotion

It could be harsh if he ends up the only person prosecuted because I highly doubt one lone man was responsible for all 11 million of those cars.

He wouldn't have done that off his own initiative. One of the top guys would have been leaning on him to "just get the job done" without actually saying break the law. Of course the top guys will all deny that and leave muggins to carry the can.

Seems he was a Californian employee and a suitable scapegoat for starters. I'm no lawyer, but aren't the 'controlling minds' responsible? No wonder Michael Horn (the then CEO N America) upped sticks and left pdq. Surely he and his contemporary directors should be in clink. I suspect extradition proceedings are in hand.....

The FBI have indicted (ie will arrest) around 8 VW executives, the lack of an extradition treaty between USA and Germany for German citizens is preventing the execution of the arrests. One German VW exec Oliver Schmidt was arrested on USA soil and has pled guilty to the deceit, an Italian VW exec was recently extradited, Those other VW execs on the list have to carefullyl assess their international travel itineries henceforth, or risk extradition from those countries who honour USA criminal matters

It is part of the German constitution that nationals may not be extradited (apart from within the EU and to an international court). The employee in question made the mistake of leaving the safe haven of Germany for a vacation.

Edit - This was James Liang who is not protected by the German constitution as he is not German. I was thinking of the manger "Herr Oliver S." who was arrested at Miami airport on holiday, unaware that he was being investigated.

The uk gov has done nothing to help uk people involved with diesel gate @ least the USA has and the horror stories about vw garages messing up folks cars on the net is most likley only the tip of the iceberg .
