mercedes amg wheels - diamond cut wheels? need help please - esa
Hello guys

Im new here nice to meet you

So i have some sport wheels which has been diamond cut and have been lacquered

After having them on for two days hey are dirty so I'm going to clean them and will continue to do so as i know diamond cut wheels are a life long commitment

Anyway so i have a routine i have gathered from reading online can someone help me

They are: (note its the first time I'm washing these)

Wash (not a jet wash just some normal shampoo and then clean with some warm water)

Polish ( use autoglym resin polish with micro cloth)

Sealant (poor boys , will put two coats on then after every cash wash i do a car wash once a week or every two week)

Wax ( will put 3 coats on then every four weeks)

What do you guys think? Shall i skip the polish and go straight to sealant and wax?

Also lets say once iv done the above i want to wash my wheels so i have to put on the sealant and wax again? And do this every time i wash my wheels?

Thanks guys

Are they on the car yet? Or are they just back from where you go them?

I'd clean them with Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel and a soft wheel brush - this will take out any brake dust that may be embedded in the surface. Dry off with terry towel or plush microfibre.

Then wipe down with Bilt Hamber Cleanser Fluid, and apply Carpro Dlux.

It needs 24 hours in the dry to dure, but once done it will last for at least a year and you can get them almost clean with only water www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tYh2T0RUVs

Jeez - what an expensive hassle we have had imposed on us by the industry.

They're cars, not ornaments! I mourn the passing of my old Audi 100 2.0SE with its plain silver plastic wheel trims, occasionally rinsed with water, looked as good at 15yrs old as when I bought it at 4yrs old. I doubt if the wheels weighed much more than the now ubiquitous fragile and corroding alloys, so easily damaged on today's roads, especially if tyre pressures are not obsessively checked.

That routine sounds way too much.
When I did care about such things I did the following:

1) Remove wheels and clean thoroughly.
2) Polish with Autoglym
3) repolish with the autogym sealer
4) put the wheels back on (v. important, that bit)

Clean with ordinary car shampoo & water as necessary.

Repeat next year - I don't believe you need to do this any more frequently.

Now, I'm with John F: give me steel wheels with plastic trim anyday

It will be interesting to see how long you can delay the inevitable spiders webs of under lacquer corrosion with this routine, can be as soon as 6 months if left to the ravages of a bad winter.

The one thing i would do is avoid the typical cheapy roadside car washes like the plague, i've never had any of my cars (old as they are) cleaned by these people, who knows what chemicals they are using or what strength.

These wheels look lovely but unfortunately they do not last long because the slightest crack in the lacquer and there's the route in for salt, best thing if you can is to have a spare set of properly painted wheels for when the salt is down, what tyres you put on them during the salt season is your choice.

Some owners on the MB forum experimented with new chrome paints applied in better wheel refinishers when their diamond cut wheels went scabby, all too quickly, apparently the finish if done right it is very close to a cut/lacquer.

I have to agree with John F and SteVee here - and I've got diamond cut alloys on my BMW. Far too much faffing about.

Drive it a lot, wash it occasionally, and get on with life.

When my diamond cut alloys got scabby they went in for blasting and stove enamelling in silver. They didn't corrode for years after that.

Only had one set of diamond cut wheels and never again. After one winter the laquer had the worm holes and in bad spots was peeling. Warranty only for 1 year and car was just over a year old when I approached them.

They needed a set of tyres so I had them blasted and a mate who is a sprayer etch primed them, primed, colour coat (Daihasu silver - just had some from a previous job) and then clearcoat. 6 years and several sets of tyres later they still looked like they did when they had been painted.

Diamond cuts might look good in a showroom but as soon as the car ljoins the real world you can forget keeping them in decent condition.

Well the above has been really useful for me. It's taught me not to buy a car that has them fitted. There are still a few cars without them, I see.

What a load of undiluted billhooks. Who in the world, apart from dedicated enthusiasts with time on their hands is gonna go through that palaver? Agree the plastic covers arer the best. But, as we know, you're hard pressed to get a motor with them fitted...unless it's a base model Dacia perhaps?

Thanks to the OP for that salutory lesson. Appreciated.

Further to my previous post, I'll add that BMW replaced 3 of the wheels FOC at the 3 year end-of-warranty check set.

The fourth one wasn't scabby, in spite of the fact that my wife had scraped the alloy wiithin 2 days of us picking the car up, 2 1/2 years previously !
