Volkswagen Touran - Gear box - Wonderwoman

Hi, I have be touran with 32000 on the clock and the gear box has a hole. Both the jcb garage and vw UK are refusing any help. Surely such a low mileage car should not be having these issues? There is no oil in the video or on my parking spot, surely there should be? Where do I go to get vw to except manufacturing default?

If a gearbox has a physical hole in it, then it's most likely from impact damage.

In which case it is nothing at all to do with VW. You would need to PROVE it was a manufacturing defect.

As above - unless you can show, at your cost, that something failed inside and punched the hole in the casing then the damage has obviously been caused by external means, so not manufacturer's or dealer's responsibility.

There is no evidance of impact damage as it was protected by a tray. The video shows you the metal pieces and what looks like a bearing that has exploded through the casing. VW UK are being very difficult and not very helpful even though the technician has advised us that it is an internal problem. Where do i go for assistance? Thanks

You would need an independent professional motor engineer to examine and produce a report stating that it was caused by internal failure. By that I mean a professionally qualified person - www.iaea-online.org for example.

However, though the car has, as you say, only 32k on the clock, you do not say hjow old it is. The Touran has been around since 2003. If the car is in excess of 6 years old, then VW will have no legal liability to you at all.

Same regarding servicing history. You don't mention if the car has been fully maintained or not (or by VW or not). If outside the VW network, then, once again, your chance of a 'goodwill contribution' from VW would be greatly reduced.

The devil is in the details, as always.

Nothing unusual here.A friend has an Audi A3 with exactly the same problem(probably the same gearbox).A gearbox bearing fails and all the internals self destruct and make an exit through the casing.I would press vw for a goodwill claim.

I really appreciate the advice given, thanks. The car is a 12 plate and has full vw service history. I am trying to get vw UK to offer some form of goodwill but to no avail. It is interesting to hear that others are having similar issues.

Google 'touran gear box problems' and you will find reams of woe. When buying a car with an automatic gearbox it is usually best to select one where the gearbox is made by a gearbox, not a car, manufacturer.

Most car makers around the world use outside gearbox manufacturers - Aisin, Jatco, ZF, Getrag or Borg-Warner - however most car brands give them unique names to hide that.

Mercedes-Benz seem determined to do their own thing.

VW Group use several of those above.

Is this maker now one that you should shift the vehicle on when warranty expires? if it's not engines shaking themselves apart or blocking EGR's, it's gearboxes.
