Mazda 5 - Rebuild/replace engine advice? - bluebirdie

Hi,

we have a 55 reg Mazda 5 MPV in which the engine 'died' back in 2014 (failed MOT because of emissions, 2 different mechanics confirmed oil burning problems and needed rebuilding or replacing or scrapping). It has languished on the drive ever since. Husband is a massive pessimist about replacing the engine (thinks it will be too much) and we bought another cheap family car while we decided what to do.

The thing is, for various reasons, we're about to buy a second car this year anyway. We'd be looking at spending £2-3k on something small and reliable with about 60k miles on it. I'm trying to persuade him that it might instead be worth looking into getting a rebuilt engine in what was a fairly decent car otherwise (OK, apart from the horrible suspension that cost us a fortune in shock absorbers and tyres)

But we're both mechanical idiots, don't know the kind of trustworthy local bloke/garage who'd be able to do it for us and fear being ripped off to be told it needs scrapping anyway. It's apparently quite a known problem in this model...

Should we cut our losses and buy a small reliable runaround? Or find a replacement engine or try and find someone to rebuild it? How best to do the latter? Thanks - your advice would be welcome.

Any decent independant should be able to source a good replacement from a breakers and fit it.

Thanks. I guess we need to find one! We'd used main dealers for servicing and repairs previously.

Is it possible to estimate how much it would cost to fit a replacement engine?

The last engine I bought was a 60,000 mile Ford Mondeo 2 litre out of a rear ended car. The engine was running perfectly and cost me £200.

Regarding fitting you need to get some quotes.

I've had a quote from local garage for fitting for £300-350, but they won't source engines themselves. They have recommended a reputable local breakers yard who apprently test engine and guarantee them for 6 month though so will give them a try.

If anyone is willing to advise on best and safest (ie no dodgy rogue traders!) way to find a replacement Mazda engine, I'd be really grateful to hear your tips...

Register with them and enter your vehicle details and the part you're looking for. Then sit back and wait for your phone to ring. Vehicle dismantlers from all over the country will be ringing you, and it's then up to you to strike a deal with the one you want, if any.

The problem with supplying an engine you find is that if its no good you'll still have to stump up the labour charges involved.

Bound to be some enterprising place about who'll take on the whole job.

If it is a known problem on this model, then fitting a s/hand engine could put you back where you started(oil burner).Don,t spend a penny more on this car .Put it on flea-bay as spares or repair.Cut your losses and move on.

I'm with the Doctor on this one,

chances are all you buying is some time before the s/h unit goes like them all.

And I'm also worried,

in my experience Maazdas are good cars,

but no matter how good the body/paint look it's a different story underneath.

I have two on my books that I advised last year at MOT time to get the sold.

One's due in next month,

this car looks like new up top, under it looks like it has been used to trailor a boat into the sea lots.

Brown doesn't do the mess justice.

Sitting on your drive since 2014 will not have improved the condition of brakes, tyres, suspension parts and underbody parts.

I would second the suggestion of putting it on eBay for spares and buying another car. (Preferably a petrol Toyota/Honda/Hyundai if buying used for a modest oulay)

Hi Bluebird.

Say the car is worth about 2K if it is in working condition. By the time you,ve sourced and fitted a replacement engine, you will have spent about 1500 quid or so cheapest, I reckon. You'v already seen that it is a money pit, so you've achieved little. Best to sell it for spares and buy something petrol, Japanese preferably.
