Audi TT, pre 2006. - 180 or 225 - spud2117
In a nut shell, I've been looking at purchasing a 02 -05 plate Audi TT and would just like to know if there is a significant difference between the 180 and 225. The 225 is my preferred option but I am finding it hard to get the colour combo with FSH that like. I have however come across a couple of 180 Bhp motors that tick all the boxes except the 225bhp one. so If I opted for a 180 would I be selling myself short. I appreciate there's the obvious difference in 0-60, top end and torque but I'm not looking to drag race off traffic lights or set regular PB's at track days but I would however hate to lose too much from the overall driving experience if there is one

Both were quick cars and I think that in normal daily driving you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference.

The torque figure (a better indicator of everyday performance over BHP) for the 180 is 173lb/ft; that for the 225 was 207lb/ft, so going from 30-70 (as in joining a motorway from a roundabout and sliproad) may be a little quicker in the 225.

Only a few of the later 180s (2004/5) were front wheel drive only, so traction in the 4WD will be equally good.

Remember, it's the same engine in both, just a different ECU, and also that this first TT had a Golf chassis and was not regarded as much of a driver's car.

If you can stretch to a 2006 on model, you'd be buying a much different and improved beast. However, if not, the original is certainly a looker.

Try the 180 you've seen and if it impresses, forget the 225.

My son had a 180bhp TT back in 2005 - band new and plenty "enjoyment" - he had some intention of the faster one BUT children started to arrive and the faster TT became a 525d (he looked like he was driving his dad's car!)

Buying a 10+ year old car condition & service history is more important than 45 bhp!
