Both were quick cars and I think that in normal daily driving you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference.
The torque figure (a better indicator of everyday performance over BHP) for the 180 is 173lb/ft; that for the 225 was 207lb/ft, so going from 30-70 (as in joining a motorway from a roundabout and sliproad) may be a little quicker in the 225.
Only a few of the later 180s (2004/5) were front wheel drive only, so traction in the 4WD will be equally good.
Remember, it's the same engine in both, just a different ECU, and also that this first TT had a Golf chassis and was not regarded as much of a driver's car.
If you can stretch to a 2006 on model, you'd be buying a much different and improved beast. However, if not, the original is certainly a looker.
Try the 180 you've seen and if it impresses, forget the 225.
