VW Golf 1.9 TDI (57 reg) - VW Golf -brief hiss sound when release accelerator - alexbr

I’ve had a brief hiss/whine coming from my car this week whenever I release the accelerator so thought I’d post here to see if anyone knew what the issue might be or whether it is likely to be serious since, as I drive to work, it’s not easy for me to take it to a garage and it’s 8 months away from its next MOT/service.

My car details are - VW Golf, 1.9 TDI, 57 reg, 90k miles

Essentially I hear a brief hiss/whine for about a second every time I release the accelerator after gaining speed (I don’t hear the noise if I just have the accelerator pressed very gently to maintain a constant speed on a slight incline, for example). I think it is at any speed, although due to the amount of other noise from the car moving at speeds above around 40 mph, it’s not particularly audible at higher speeds.

I don’t recall hearing anything like this before a 2-week break from work for Christmas – I only used my car for very short distances over that break.

I’ve seen similar threads here and on other forums but nothing seems quite like this.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

As you lift off after accelerating (for instance, when changing up to the next gear) turbos often make a characteristic noise as the compressor slows down, it can sound like a 'chirp' or whistle that changes pitch.

You say you haven't heard this before, check that air intake/boost connections are not loose and that no sound insulation under the bonnet has fallen off.

Thanks for the reply.

I've had a look at the things you've suggested and nothing looks unusual compared to normal or loose but, despite posting in the technical forums, I'm definitely non-technical when it comes to cars, so that doesn't mean there isn't an issue.

Does it seem like an issue I should get properly checked at a garage or leave for the moment unless it gets worse? I don't get the noise when using the accelerator in neutral so it's hard for me to test to better identify what might be causing the sound!

It could be a loose hose / connnection of even a split hose. As you're not technically minded I would suggest you take it to a compentent garage for their diagnosis. I doubt it's anything serious or that cannot be fixed for a modest spend.
