Chery Tiggo 4 CSH Verdict

4/5
Honest John Overall Rating
The Chery Tiggo 4 is not perfect, but it's good in lots of areas and acceptable in others. Crucially, it's loaded with kit and exceedingly good value, which makes it exceedingly tempting if you're after a full-hybrid compact SUV with a premium feel.

+Exceptional value for money. High-quality, spacious interior. Huge warranty.

-Overbearing driver assistance systems. Unremarkable driving experience. Overly assisted steering.

Chery Tiggo 4: Everything you need to know

The Tiggo 4 is the fourth Chery to launch in the UK in just seven months, and it brings a new, entry-level car to the Chinese brand's stable. Priced at less than £20,000 for a full-hybrid small SUV – designed to woo would-be customers of cars like the Ford Puma, the Volkswagen T-Roc and more – it comes crammed with kit and has a stonking eight-year warranty.

For comparison, the Puma mild-hybrid line-up starts at more than £27,000, and the new T-Roc costs more than £31,000. The MG ZS Hybrid+, which itself is something of a bargain, is nearly £23,000. The Dacia Duster – a byword for value – is almost £22,000 for the standard car and at least £25,000 for the hybrid.

On paper, at least, the Tiggo 4 seems like an absolute bargain. It looks smart, with some nice detailing and a large grille as seen on the Tiggo 7, the Tiggo 8 and the Tiggo 9. The interior feels premium, with convincing synthetic leather seats on the high-spec model we've tried, and twin screens providing infotainment and instrument panel duties. All models have dual-zone climate control and keyless entry and start.

Power comes from a 95PS 1.5-litre petrol engine attached to a hybrid system – the first full-hybrid in a Chery Tiggo – with a combined output of 204PS and 310Nm. That's decent power, especially at this price point. It means a 0-62mph time of 8.9 seconds and CO2 emissions of just 120g/km.

Is it all too good to be true? Read on to find out.

How we tested the Chery Tiggo 4

We drove the top-spec Tiggo 4 Aspire on a winding route over a couple of hours through Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire at the car's UK launch event. We covered flowing country B-roads, a stretch of the M40, urban traffic around Milton Keynes and some manoeuvring at regular stops along the way, all of which gave us a pretty good introduction to the car.

2026 Chery Tiggo 4

Is the Chery Tiggo 4 a good car?

How good the Chery Tiggo 4 is depends on how you look at it. Taken on its own merits, there are things that aren't perfect – the steering is too light and overly assisted, some of the driver safety systems are far too nannying, and there are a few cheap-feeling materials inside. There's too much road noise, too.

But then you look at the price, and the long warranty, and the fact that it's really not too bad to drive around in. You factor in the overall feeling of quality, the decent space inside, and the amount of kit you get for the money – and it really is very affordable – and suddenly the annoyances seem far easier to live with.

To get a full-hybrid car, packed with kit, for less than £20,000 is remarkable in this day and age. You can't get anything else of this sophistication for less, and while we'd like the Tiggo 4 to be better in some areas, it's hard to dissuade people from the notion that this is an absolute bargain.

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH handling and engines

Driving Rating
The driving experience in the Chery Tiggo 4 is probably its weakest attribute, with too much road noise and overly assisted steering. However, it's competent enough to keep most people happy, especially when you factor in the price. Is it good? Not especially. Is it good enough? Absolutely.

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH 2026: Handling and ride quality

The way the Tiggo 4 drives isn't bad. It's not great, either, but it's acceptable, and for the vast majority of people, that will be enough. You can pick holes in it – the ride is rather firm, road noise is rather high at higher speeds, and the steering has far too much electric assistance, which makes it feel overly assisted, very light and almost disconnected from the front wheels.

And yet, once again, the low price can make you forgive its sins. It holds steady through corners, and the damping in the suspension is enough to stop the ride from being uncomfortable. Turn the steering wheel, and the car goes where you want it to go, which is all it really needs to do. At low speeds, the light steering makes manoeuvring straightforward, and the multi-camera system – standard on the Summit trim – makes it tricky to bash into anything.

Driving enthusiasts will be disappointed by the Tiggo 4, but those who just want to go from A to B will be able to do that with ease.

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH 2026: Engines

There's a single engine choice in the Tiggo 4, and it's the Chery Super Hybrid, as the company likes to call it. A 1.5-litre petrol engine is paired with an electric drive system, whiuch produces 204PS and 310Nm, which translates to a 0-62mph time of 8.9 seconds.

2026 Chery Tiggo 4

Power delivery is smooth and relatively effortless – it doesn't initially feel as sprightly as its power figure would suggest, but the oomph is there from the accelerator when you need it, and the acceleration figures are reasonable.

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH 2026: Safety

All versions of the Tiggo 4 have seven airbags and a range of driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and more. Several of these are rare to find as standard on cars at this price.

All models also get at least a rear parking camera and rear parking sensors, while the top-spec Summit has a 360-degree camera system and front parking sensors, too. There are Isofix child-seat mounting points on the outer rear seats.

Independent safety organisation Euro NCAP tested the Tiggo 4 – or, rather, its near-identical twin, the Ebro S400 – in 2025 and decided that the two cars were similar enough to give the Chery the same rating as the Ebro. That rating is four stars out of a possible five, with a star knocked off for a slightly sub-standard result from crash test damage to rear-seat passengers. That said, four stars is still decent. For comparison, the Dacia Duster has a three-star rating.

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH 2026: Towing

The Chery Tiggo 4 has a braked towing capacity of 1300kg and 750kg unbraked.

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH interior

Interior Rating
Both in the amount of features and in the general build quality and materials, the Tiggo 4 feels more expensive than it is, with a genuine premium vibe that belies its price tag. It's spacious inside, too, although the boot is a weird shape.

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH 2026: Practicality

Although it's a relatively small SUV, there's a lot of room inside the Tiggo 4. Even tall adults should have no issues fitting in the outer back seats, with good headroom and reasonable legroom, although squeezing a third grown-up in the middle could be a bit of a squeeze, even though the raised tunnel down the centre of the car is minimal.

The boot is a bit of an oddity, with a lump in the load area to accommodate the battery, but it's a reasonable size at 430 litres, which expands to 1155 if you fold down the 60:40 split back seats.

2026 Chery Tiggo 4 interior

The glove box is a good size, and there's an extra storage area under the centre console (replete with USB-A and USB-C charging ports), as well as a cubby under the front centre armrest, a wireless charging tray for your phone, and two cupholders next to the gear lever.

There are door pockets in both the front and back doors, a small cubby in the back of the centre console for rear-seat passengers, next to another USB charger in the Summit trim, as well as magazine pockets in the back of the front seats.

Model Boot space (in five-seat mode up to window line)
Chery Tiggo 4 430 litres
Dacia Duster 517 litres
Ford Puma 456 litres
Citroen C3 Aircross 460 litres
Skoda Kamiq 400 litres
Omoda 5 380 litres
Nissan Juke 422 litres

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH 2026: Quality and finish

First impressions when you get into the Chery Tiggo 4, are very... well, impressive. It's hard to believe at first glance that this is a sub-£20k car. The design is sophisticated and the materials, at least in the Summit model that we've tried, are very good.

There are a few signs of the cost-savings if you look hard enough – the grey plastic on the centre console is very hard, and the strip of dark grey trim across the dashboard looks and feels rather cheap, but otherwise everything feels solid, well-made and solidly put together. The leather on the steering wheel feels good, the gear shifter feels like it comes from a much more premium car, and the stalks move with a satisfying clunk.

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH 2026: Infotainment

We've not had a huge amount of time to play with the Tiggo 4's infotainment system, but based on our short interactions, it seems to work well, responding quickly and with a bright, high-resolution 12.3-inch screen. There's a digital driver display of the same size, and the two are housed in one unit that looks like an elongated tablet.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both included as standard, so you actually have little reason to interact with the infotainment system if you don't want to when it comes to things like music and navigation. That said, you can fiddle with the various door locking and energy regeneration settings within the system, adjust interior ambient lighting, watch videos and view pictures from a USB source.

There's a four-speaker sound system in the entry-level Aspire model, and a six-speaker system in the Summit, which is adequate rather than spectacular.

In an age where an increasing number of cars rely on the touchscreen for just about every function of the car, it's nice that Chery has included a few shortcut buttons below the screen – a Home button, driving modes, external camera (oh yes, it has several of those), volume up and down and on/off. There's also a dedicated panel for air-con controls, although its black glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet.

There are also fingerprint-attracting shortcut buttons on the steering wheel for media controls, as well as the adaptive cruise control.

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH value for money

Value for Money Rating
The Chery Tiggo 4 might be packed with kit, especially on the top-spec model, but the price is almost rock bottom. £19,995 gets you the Aspire version, but with the fully loaded Summit model only £2000 more, we'd go for that. And it's still cheaper than just about any equivalent car on the road.

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH 2026: Prices

These are the current prices for the Chery Tiggo 4 from launch (April 2026), although given that prices change often, check the Chery site to make sure you have the most up-to-date prices.

Chery Tiggo 4 Aspire £19,995
Chery Tiggo 4 Summit £21,995

Chery usually has good deals for both PCP and lease financing, so if you're looking at a Tiggo 4 compared to rivals, it's worth spending some time to work out what your monthly outgoings will be.

Currently, Chery is offering a representative 6.9% APR on a PCP on a Tiggo 4 Summit, which means if you put down £3879 deposit, you'll pay just £259 a month. That's over 48 months with an 8000 miles-per-year limit. Remember, however, that a representative APR figure doesn't always match the figure you'll be offered.

Is the Chery Tiggo 4 good value compared with rivals?

Yes, absolutely. While there are better cars of this type than the Tiggo 4, none come close to offering the same mix of premium feel and features for the money. It's some £7000 less than Ford's Puma, which has less kit (although it is far more involving to drive), and also undercuts the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Toyota Yaris Cross, as well as the already-good-value Dacia Duster and MG ZS.

You can get a better car than the Chery, but you'll have to convince yourself that it's worth the considerable extra outlay.

2026 Chery Tiggo 4

Chery Tiggo 4 CSH 2026: Reliability and running costs

The Tiggo 4's hybrid drivetrain offers, according to official combined WLTP testing figures, up to 53.2mpg, and based on our short test drive, that seems pretty close to what you'll get in a real-world setting, although actual results will depend on how you use it.

Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax) will be at the standard flat rate of £200. Chery offers a very compelling seven-year/100,000-mile warranty on the Tiggo 4, and eight years cover on the battery. Servicing is due every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes sooner.
