Peugeot 308 (2007 – 2014) At A Glance
It may not look like it from outside, but it's got more sparkle than a Dolly Parton dress.
Everything is right: grip, steering feel, engine power, and what doesn't usually correspond with these, ride quality.
Peugeot must have taken the handcuffs off its chassis engineers and told them to make it handle better than any other medium hatchback. Then nicked the great little engine out of the 207 THP 150 (and MINI Cooper S), gave it longer gearing, and shoved it under the bonnet.
The result is a car with the body of Jo Brand, the sharpness of Jo Brand and the energy of Russell.

I've not had to top up the oil in my Peugeot 308 in between services - is something wrong with it?
I have a Peugeot 308. I have done 20,000 miles since I bought it, total mileage is 40,000, and I had the engine oil changed twice. I'm concerned that I have not had to top up the oil level in between services. The water level is fine, so what else could be wrong - if anything?
Sometimes if the driver switches off the engine of a diesel with a DPF while it is in the middle of actively regenerating, diesel fuel intended to fire off the DPF to burn the soot in it can seep into the sump, raising the oil level. So if the engine was using oil, that oil used could be replaced by (and diluted) by diesel. But you probably have nothing to worry about.
Why is getting a towbar fitted so expensive?
An independent workshop wants to charge £500 to supply and fit a towbar to my Peugeot 308. They claim they have little choice given the complexity of modern-day electrics. Is there a cheaper way?
All towbars have had to be specifically EU Type Approved under Directive 94/20/EC, which became compulsory under EU legislation in 1998. So no, there isn't a cheaper route.
Peugeot 308 keeps jumping out of gear - help!
I purchased a Peugot 308 1.6 HDi in October 2015 from a dealer. I purchased it with 24,000 miles on the clock and 12 months warranty. I have covered just over 10,000 miles since purchase and it has developed a gearbox problem. Whilst driving on the M4 doing around 70mph it decided to jump out of fifth gear. When I put it back and applied power it would keep disengaging and going in to neutral.
The warranty covers this and its going in soon to be stripped down by the dealership. The pre-assessment check told me it will need a new gearbox. The warranty company want photos and a report and I'm now afraid they are going to worm their way out of it. Have you come across this before and how should I go about this awful situation?
I've had cars in which this has happened in the past but don't remember specific reports of this on mid size Citroens or Peugeots (though this isn't the greatest box ever built). It's beyond the scope of dealer liability because it happened more than 6 months after you bought the car, so you are reliant on the warranty insurer. If the warranty insurer instructed the garage to remove and dismantle the transmission then, if they turn down the claim, they have to pay for it to all be put back together again allowing you to take it to a gearbox specialist. Since this would cost the warranty insurer more than just fixing it, I think they will fix it.
Why is the ABS light on my 308 permanently on?
I have a problem with a 2009 (59 plate) Peugeot 308 1.6 diesel. The car drives fine but I now have a ABS brake fault. I have taken it to my mechanic who says that it's a specialist job. The diagnostics state that it's the ABS pump - "stating recirculation pump electrical fault permanent." I have been reading frantically and seen some people saying that this might not be the ABS pump but the control unit or brain for the car. Can you help?
Might be a wheel sensor. But most likely to be the brake pressure sensor in the ATE Teves Mk 60 ABS/ESP module. http://www.ecutesting.com can fix it for about £400, but you have to send them the module.
