Cupra Formentor At A Glance

4/5
Honest John Overall Rating
Great to drive and with stand out styling, we're really impressed by the Cupra Formentor, the brand's first standalone model. The top models have some serious performance yet the Formentor remains comfortable, making it a great all rounder.

+High quality SUV that feels special. Great performance and sound from top models. Stand out styling and offers something different.

-People will keep asking you what it is...

On average it achieves 0% of the official MPG figure

The Cupra badge was a signifier of fast SEATs in the past, but these days, Cupra is a brand in its own right that has gone on to eclipse that brand that started it. And it's easy to see why when the Cupra Formentor is such an appealing SUV. It has a distinctly sporting flavour to it looks, and to its driving experience, but it also remains sensible. So what's a Cupra Formentor like to own? Read our full review to find out.

We love the coupe-esque SUV styling of the Cupra Formentor. Okay, so it's not that practical (if you want that there's the Cupra Ateca) but there's enough room for everyday family use. Cupra has also worked to give the interior a special feel, and it's paid off. This feels like much more than merely a posh SEAT, with a genuinely premium edge inside: although to be fair, this is dependant on spec.

Top-of-the-range models have leather-clad seats with a quilted design, a 12.0-inch floating navigation system (this was later upgraded to 12.9 inches across the range) and plenty of nice-to-touch metal and leather stitched elements inside. Stick an Audi badge on that steering wheel and you wouldn't know the difference.

Of course being a Cupra, the Formentor is mostly about performance, but Cupra has expanded the range to appeal to those that want the looks without all the pace. So yes, there's the top-of-the-range 2.0 TSI 4Drive with 310PS (later upgraded to 333PS) if you want to embarrass the boy racers. But smaller engines are available.

These include a much more sensible 1.5 TSI with 150PS and the Cupra Formentor e-Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid offered with a variety of different outputs.

Despite its SUV design, the Cupra Formentor feels more like a hot hatch from behind the wheel, with excellent body control and responsive steering. Yet it's also surprisingly comfortable with a forgiving ride, making it an excellent all rounder.

The Cupra isn't especially affordable though. List prices start at around £35,000 and that's for the entry level 1.5 TSI 150 model. If you want an e-Hybrid you're looking at around £42k as a minimum, while the all singing and dancing 333PS version starts at an eyebrow raising £49k.

Cupra Formentor handling and engines

Driving Rating
The Cupra Formentor may be an SUV, but it doesn't drive like one. It feels more like a hot hatch, with excellent grip and impressive agility. In fact, it's one of the best handling SUVs around.

Cupra Formentor 2025: Handling and ride quality

Despite its SUV raised ride height, the Formentor handles far more like a hot hatch. In fact we can't think of an SUV this side of a Porsche Macan that's as well set up. The steering is nicely weighted and has just the right level of responsiveness, while there's very little body roll, even if you really throw it into a corner.

It means the Cupra Formentor is far more enjoyable to drive than you may think. Of course, it does help if you have one of the most powerful versions, but even the modest 1.5 TSI is still good fun on a twisty road. All versions are impressively agile, and feel reassuringly stable when changing direction quickly.

Yet for all its hot-hatch-ness, the Cupra Formentor is also comfortable. Sit on the motorway at 70mph, and it's smooth and quiet, while the forgiving ride means you can use this as a family car without making the kids feel sick every time you approach a speed bump or pothole. This is especially true in VZ models, which have Dynamic Chassis Control adjustable suspension as standard.

Cupra Formentor 2025: Engines

The Cupra Formentor's engine range has seen quite a bit of change over the time its been on sale.

When it was first released, the car was available with a variety of turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines: a 150PS 1.5-litre, 2.0-litre units with either 190PS or 245PS, two plug-in hybrids that combine a 1.4-litre petrol engine and an electric motor to give overall outputs of either 204PS or 245PS, and a range-topping 2.0-litre model producing 310PS.

The least powerful engine got a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, although the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic was optional. The auto was standard-fit on the rest of the petrol range, and it serves up slick and smooth changes whether you're cruising along or driving more energetically.

Whether you choose the optional automatic or not, the 150PS model is a really good entry-level car. Its engine is smooth and quiet and serves up decent performance: 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds regardless of the transmission you choose. A top speed of up to 127mph means cruising is relaxed: in fact, you'll struggle to pin-point engine noise at the legal limit.

Predictably, the 190 4Drive and 245PS models serve up a bit more performance, getting from 0-62mph in 7.1 and 6.8 seconds, respectively. The 190PS model has four-wheel drive, which gives you plenty of traction in slippery conditions, but both versions have useful overtaking power.

The 310PS model feels pretty ballistic by comparison, going from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds: that's less than a second off a Porsche 911's figure, and quicker than the Cupra Leon hot hatch (5.7 seconds). That said, some of down is down to the four-wheel system that launches it off the line more quickly. Even so, the high-performance Formentor still lacks the Cupra Leon's explosive mid-range punch, which could be because the Formentor tips the scales at 1644kg compared to the Leon's 1490kg.

Excess weight's is something that afflicts the PHEV models due to their heavy batteries, with figures of 1681kg (204PS model) and 1704kg (245PS). However, they still post decent 0-62mph figures of 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds, and 7.0 seconds, respectively. In practice, the rate of acceleration feels much more leisurely than these figures suggest, but that's because there's such a vast pause between you burying the accelerator and anything actually happening, such is the slow response of the powertrain.

If you can live with this, there's not a lot else to complain about. Unlike some other PHEVs, it's easy to chunter about on electricity without ever engaging the engine: even accelerating from a standstill to 60mph won't produce the slightest whiff of an exhaust fume, making it a relaxing car to travel in.

In 2024, a facelift to the Formentor saw the introduction of some new powertrain options: a new version of the 1.5 TSI petrol engine with a six-speed manual gearbox, and a mild-hybrid version called the eTSI, which comes with a DSG automatic transmission. Both have 150PS.

There was also a new version of the e-Hybrid powertrain that swapped the old 1.4-litre petrol engine for a 1.5, and got a bigger battery for an improved electric-only range of more than 70 miles. In V1, V2 and V3 trims it has 204PS, while in the more performance-focused VZ trims, it delivers 272PS.

The VZ range also got a new, more powerful range-topping 2.0-litre turbo petrol petrol engine, with 333PS powering all four wheels. Predictably, it feels exceptionally quick and makes a great noise, although to be fair, you'll probably struggle to detect the difference in either area compared with the older engine. Another 2.0-litre petrol-powered option, this time with 265PS, arrived later in 2024, but we haven't had the chance to try it yet.

Cupra Formentor 2025: Safety

The Cupra Formentor was awarded the maximum five star rating by Euro NCAP for crash safety when it was tested in 2021. Adult occupant safety was rated 93% and child occupant safety at 88%. Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injury in the event of a rear-end collision.

The Formentor is available with predictive and adaptive cruise control (ACC) which uses information from the navigation along with the front-mounted camera and Traffic Sign Recognition, allowing it to proactively adjust the cruise speed depending on the road layout ahead: bends, roundabouts, junctions, changes in speed limits and built-up areas.

Cupra Formentor 2025: Towing

If you're towing, chances are a Cupra Formentor ain't going to be too high on your list of possible purchases. However, it can tow up to 750kg unbraked and 1700kg braked if you choose the top 333PS version.

Cupra Formentor interior

Interior Rating
Cupra upped the quality of the interior of the Formentor compared with its previous offerings, and the cabin feels more premium than the Ateca's, with a minimal and clean design. Despite its 'coupe SUV' design, it's surprisingly practical, too, with a good sized boot.

Cupra Formentor 2025: Practicality

Designed as a 'coupe SUV', if such a thing exists, you may think practicality wouldn't be the Cupra Formentor's strong point. But it's actually pretty good when it comes to boot space.

True that coupe-esque profile means there's not as much cargo space as in a Cupra Ateca, but the Formentor still has 450 litres of carrying space (420 litres for 4Drive models and only 345 litres for the e-Hybrids) with 1475 litres when the rear seats are folded down. A Cupra Ateca has 485 litres.

The deep boot and wide opening mean you can easily fit a pushchair in there and there's more than enough room for a big shop. Even a Christmas one. Ideal for when you've booked your click and collect slot.

The trade off here is that rear legroom isn't great, so it's not the perfect family SUV. With a full size grown up driving and having their seat all the way back, anyone sat behind will find minimal room for knees. It's also a real squeeze for child car seats. But again, if space is your priority, you'll probably be better off with a Cupra Ateca.

Cupra Formentor 2025: Quality and finish

Drive a top-of-the-range Cupra in VZ3 trim, and you'll find an interior that can genuinely rival the likes of Audi for quality and finish. There's lots of upmarket metal trim and leather stitched trim on most of the bits you'll be touching. The quilted leather seats are a real highlight. The design is minimal rather than daring, but it feels special nonetheless.

Move down the trim levels and it's not quite as plush though. The entry VZ1 models feel a bit less Audi and a bit more SEAT. That's no bad thing, but there's a significant difference the more you pay. This was especially the case in pre-facelift models, but the standard of the materials has become a little more uniform on more recent Formentors.

However, there are no complaints about the fit and finish. Everything works with precision, and the switches have the usual Volkswagen Group quality feel. It's a very well made interior.

Cupra Formentor 2025: Infotainment

The Cupra Formentor's interior is dominated by a whopping big screen that sits in the middle of the dashboard (12.0 inches before the 2024 facelift, 12.9 inches thereafter) and controls pretty much everything. It looks good with bright, high resolution graphics, and there are endless menus and settings you can play with.

While it looks great, the system's ease-of-use isn't what it could - or probably should - be. This is the same infotainment you'll find on most latest-generation Volkswagen Group products but despite spending countless hours with it in various different cars, we still haven't got to grips with it properly, because it's just not very well designed. Even the most simple tasks seem overly fiddly, it's all just too distracting when you're driving.

We're not fans of the touch-sensitive slider control below the screen for adjusting the cabin temperature and stereo volume. These are way more fiddly and inaccurate that traditional knobs. In older cars, they weren't backlit, either, and so were impossible to see and use at night. At least the latter issue was fixed during the 2024 facelift.

Cupra Formentor value for money

Value for Money Rating
The Cupra Formentor isn't cheap. Prices start at around £35,000 while top models can get up to more than £50,000. But it is well equipped for the money, with even the entry V1 version getting plenty of standard kit.

Cupra Formentor 2025: Prices

Cupra wants to be seen as an upmarket and 'exclusive' brand in its own right, which we suppose explains the high prices. The entry level Cupra Formentor with the 1.5 TSI engine is around £35k.

The Cupra does have value on its side, though, with a very extensive list of standard equipment for the money. Even V1 models come with pretty much everything you need: even a heated steering wheel on DSG models. You won't be seeing that on your entry-level BMW X1...

There's a big jump if you want one of the e-Hybrids, though, with the cheapest of those costing around £42,000. And if you want the all singing and dancing 333PS model, you'll be looking at a minimum of £45,000.

Cupra Formentor 2025: Running Costs

The most affordable Cupra Formentor to run is, unsurprisingly, the e-Hybrid version. The early versions had an all-electric range of about 30 miles, but the PHEV versions  from after the 2024 facelift improved this to more than 70 miles. This explains its official WLTP economy figure of more than 200mpg for all of them. Of course, that'll be virtually impossible to replicate in the real world, as with any PHEV.

The petrols aren't any great shakes when it comes to economy, the best being the 1.5 TSI 150 which should see about 40mpg (or 45mpg at a push) but go for one of the fastest 310PS or 333PS models, and you'll be fortunate to see 30mpg.

Model History

March 2019

Cupra Formentor concept revealed at Geneva Motor Show

Cupra has revealed a close-to-production plug-in hybrid concept SUV at the Geneva Motor Show.

Named after a Spanish peninsula, Cupra insists its Formentor is definitely just a concept car. It looks to be pretty much production-ready though, and we reckon it will go on sale as the firm's halo model as soon as 2020.

SEAT's offshoot, Cupra, went standalone with the recent Cupra Ateca - a sporty version of the popular Ateca crossover.

In terms of design, the Formentor very much looks like a mixture of the Ateca and the new SEAT Tarraco SUV. It's a coupe-crossover, in the same ilk as the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.

The interior is typical Volkswagen Group, aside from the leather-clad bucket seats and new 10-inch floating navigation system, the cabin is filled with dark plastics. Cupra is intended to provide a mix of premium and sportiness, and the Formentor's cabin reflects this.

It'll be powered by a plug-in petrol hybrid engine which produces a combined 245PS. That's less than the Cupra Ateca, but the firm says the Formentor will "surpass the performance expectations of the driver". In typical Volkswagen Group fashion, it gets a DSG automatic gearbox, while an intelligent Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) and differential lock will aid handling.

While performance and fuel economy figures are yet to be confirmed (this is just a concept, remember), Cupra says the Formentor will be able to drive in pure electric mode for up to 31 miles.

July 2020

Cupra Formentor available to order

Cupra UK has opened pre-orders for the new Cupra Formentor coupé crossover SUV.

Customers that wish to be one of the first to receive a Formentor in the UK can register for an early production slot at preorder.cupraofficial.co.uk by paying a £500 deposit.

Customers that pre-order the Cupra Formentor will receive a limited-edition VZ model, packed full of the latest performance and connectivity technology. This will be available exclusivly with the 2.0-litre 310PS four-wheel drive engine.

Only 100 VZ Edition models will be delivered to the UK with exclusive upgrades for pre-bookers. The name VZ comes from the word ‘Veloz’ in Spanish, translating as ‘Speed’ or ‘Fast’.

Production of the CUPRA Formentor, the first model developed exclusively for the brand, will commence shortly with the first vehicles arriving in the UK in quarter four 2020.

October 2020

Cupra Formentor priced from £27,300

The Formentor is offered in six trim levels, named V1, V2, VZ1, VZ2, VZ3 and VZ Edition. As standard on V1 trim, customers get 18-inch alloy wheels, 12-inch infotainment touchscreen with connected navigation, 10-inch digital driver binnacle, LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, Adaptive Cruise Control, wireless smartphone charger, a leather steering wheel and rear parking sensors, all as standard. The name VZ comes from the word ‘Veloz’ in Spanish, translating as ‘Speed’ or ‘Fast’.

To ensure Cupra remains accessible to all, Formentor is available with a 150PS TSI engine, either with a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. Prices will start from £27,300 for the 150PS TSI manual V1 model.

The Cupra Formentor engine line-up is comprised of five outputs, all of which are RDE2 certified. The 1.5-litre TSI engine is available as a 150PS while the 2.0-litre TSI will be offered as a 190PS.

For drivers that want the dramatic design of a CUPRA with eco-conscious performance, the Plug-in Hybrid Variant will be available. A 1.4-litre TSI 150PS petrol engine is paired to a 115PS electric motor, powered by a 13kWh lithium-ion battery pack, can be tuned to either 204PS or 245PS. The eHybrid has a predicted electric-only range of 31miles.

Both the 1.5-litre and 1.4-litre plug-in variants will be available to order in the UK from quarter one 2021.

At the top of the range is the 2.0-litre TSI DSG-auto 4Drive model, generating 310PS of peak power and 400Nm of torque.
