Broadly the same as the electric Audi e-tron SUV, the e-tron Sportback has a range of up to 240 miles.

Each axle is fitted with an electric motor providing an output of 265kW (360PS) and 561Nm of torque. It'll reach 62mph in 6.6 seconds and top speed is limited to 124mph. Boost mode can provide 300kW (408PS) and 664Nm of torque, dropping the 0-62mph sprint to 5.7 seconds.

The position of the drive components provide a centre of gravity that's much lower than a conventional SUV, says Audi. Weight is distributed between the axles with a ratio of almost 50:50, while the standard-fit Drive Select system allows drivers to switch between a number of profiles. All UK e-tron Sportback models will have sport adaptive air suspension capable of varying the ride height by up to 76mm.

On long-distance routes, the Audi e-tron Sportback 55 quattro can charge with direct current (DC) at up to 150kW at fast-charging stations. In just under half an hour, the battery reaches 80 per cent of its capacity.

With a wheelbase of 2928mm, the Audi e-tron Sportback has space for five occupants along with their bags. Rear headroom is 20mm less than in the standard Audi e-tron. There's 615 litres of luggage capacity including the 60-litre stowage compartment under the bonnet. Dropping the rear seats increases this to 1655 litres.

Inside, screens for the optional virtual door mirrors are integrated into the door trims. Infotainment is provided by a 12.1-inch touchscreen display, and a lower 8.6-inch display. Audi's 12.3-inch virtual cockpit is also fitted as standard.

The Audi e-tron Sportback will reach its first UK customers in the second quarter of 2020. To mark the launch, Audi will offer a limited run Edition One version finished in plasma blue and taking the S line model as its basis. Its additional specification will include the virtual exterior mirrors, aluminium-look body detailing, exclusive 21-inch wheels, orange brake callipers, the panoramic glass sunroof, the Bang & Olufsen Premium 3D Sound System and the comprehensive Tour assist package. The interior also features customised contour comfort seats with exclusive Monaco grey seat covers in Valcona leather.
