Rover 214. Bump Starts but will not turn over with starter

I tried starting my Rover after work the other night and the car would just not attempt to turn over, however what I believe to be the starter motor made a singular click. Assuming the car battery had only died, I then bump started the car and it ran fine. Took it for a good 1 hour drive to charge the battery. Checked the charging light in case it was the alternator and all was good. However when I tried to start the car the next day I had the same problem. As I had already cheeked all interior lights I assumed it was the battery and bought a new one. All fitted and yet I still have the same problem. Car will bump start easy as pie but will not turn over with the key. Any ideas guys?
