What's happened to my Vauxhall Astra's gearbox?

My Vauxhall Astra has just made a 'thud' sound when I tried to set off and now it will not drive. The car will go in gear and the clutch feels as normal, it just will not drive when a gear is selected.

Reads like a shaft has snapped.
