How much will it cost to repair my 1998 Ford Fiesta's gearbox oil leak?

My 1998 Ford Fiesta 1.3's gearbox is leaking oil and there's a slight whining noise on pull-off in first gear. Very occasionally it cuts out when pulling up to a junction. What gearbox oil do I need, where do I fill it, can I tell how much is in it, and what will happen if there is nothing left in it? The leak seems to be coming from a corrugated rubber seal on the rod that enters the gearbox. Is this expensive?

If the box is running low on oil then the wear rate will increase and it could fail completely. You obviously cannot do this job yourself, so get it to a garage.
