Which 4x4 should my father buy for use in snow?

My father struggled through the Northumbrian winter last year, getting his car through the snow. He has decided that a 4x4 is a must. He's got up to £15,000 to spend, would like something not much older than two or three years, and nothing too big. I thought a RAV4 may do the job, but he's got his eye on a Grand Vitara, which I've never really heard people rave about. Any advice?
