Why does the frequency and price of fixing faulty VWG vehicles seem at odds with their popularity?

I enjoy reading your column on a Saturday morning. I have noticed over the years that VWG products seem to feature quite significantly, both in frequency and expensive resolution. This seems at odds to me with the popularity of the products and your seeming favourable reviews of them. Am I missing something? Is it because there are so many of them that problems appear more frequent? I also sensed your support for their position regarding the refusal to compensate European owners over the emissions scandal, despite doing so in the USA. Please reassure me that you are impartial in these issues.

You're not missing anything. Go to the Good/Bad sections in www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar for any VWG product and read the complaints received about them. Volkswagen used to claim "Few things in life are as reliable as a Volkswagen". That line was banned by the ASA 15 years ago because it wasn't true. But the fact remains "Few things in life are as reliable as a good advertising slogan." I'm not interested in 'punishing' Volkswagen for its lies and deceptions. However, I would like to see the company compelled to fix all the faults on its faulty products and in particular be compelled to ensure that all cars recalled for the NOx emissions 'fix' be repaired so that they run as well as they did and are as economical as they were before the 'fix'. The situation is different in the USA because the emissions requirements there are tougher and the cars simply cannot be fixed in order to meet the regulations. That is why American owners are being offered compensation commensurate with the value of their cars after their usage of them.
