Why is the starter turning over when the battery is connected?

I have an issue with my Audi A4 2.5. I have replaced the EGR valve and the oil breather filter just below the EGR valve. I put it all back together and all was good but after a short drive I heard quite a rough noise. I stopped to check it out and turned off the ignition but the starter continued to turn the engine over. It stopped long enough for me to get home but now the starter turns over as soon as the battery is connected. I'm completely baffled and help would be appreciated.
It would sound as though you have a permanent live feed to the starter. It could be the starter motor solenoid that has stuck, or that you have a short in the wiring circuit (between ignition and starter) .
