Why are my Citroen Xsara's temperature warning light and 'STOP' light flashing at me?

Had a bit of a scare this weekend when my 2001 Citroen Xsara's red warning light above the temperature gauge and the 'STOP' signal on the dashboard started flashing at me. The thermometer shows nothing out of the ordinary, 90 degrees or so, but I've topped up the oil and water. It seemed to help for a while but then the same thing started happening again.

When you say you topped up the oil and water, was the car actually losing water? If so, have you had the cooling system pressure checked? If, as you say, the car runs ok and the temp gauge shows normal, then it could possibly be an electrical fault. If so then you would need a circuit diagram (normally found in a workshop manual) to assist in tracing the fault.
