How can I tell when the DPF regen cycle has completed?

I own a 2012 Mazda 3 with a 1.6-litre diesel engine. Recently a warning light came has come on, stating that the oil level is too high. A local mechanic tells me this is something to do with the DPF regeneration. Is this correct? If so, how can I tell when the DPF has completed its regeneration?

This was caused by shutting off the engine several times while it was actively regenerating. You can tell when this is happening by the heat generated and by the instant fuel consumption rising. But you are right. Cars should have a DPF regeneration light to warn you not to shut off the engine while active regeneration is taking place.
