Why is my Ford C-MAX losing power?

I have a Ford C-MAX2.0 petrol automatic (2007 model) that has just turned 56,000 miles. I have today experienced a loss of power but managed to limp home at which point an amber light appeared on my dashboard and a warning 'transmission malfunction'. I am no mechanic. I thought this perhaps could be the clutch but I am not sure. Can you offer any advice?

This will be a four-speed torque converter auto. Could be that the torque converter itself has given up. Go to www.fedauto.co.uk and call in your nearest auto specialist.
