Is running on low fuel bad for your car?

I have read in a number of places that is a bad idea to run a diesel car on low fuel. Apparently you should never let it go below 1/4 of a tank. Is this correct? And if so, why?

So that junk, detritus, emulsified fuel, water and even petrol normally floating on top of the diesel do not reach the fuel pick-up and destroy the high pressure fuel injection pump.
