Is it common for 2005 Vauxhall Corsa camshafts to snap?

I have a Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 which is on an 05 plate. On Friday I was travelling down the motorway at 70mph when the engine management light came on. It started flashing and the car lost power. I pulled over and called the RAC. The initial diagnosis was the ignition coil, however a new one didn't work. A neighbour, who is a mechanic, has stripped the engine and said that there are bent valves in the head and the engine camshaft has snapped.

Is this a common problem? The car has done 76,000 miles. The first three services were by Vauxhall but then I got my neighbour to do them. Can I get any money back from Vauxhall, as all the things I've read on the internet suggest that it's a known problem.

Yes, it's a very common problem. The stretch bolts holding the camshaft in place loosen.
