Snapped timing chain - should I replace the engine?

The timing chain has snapped on my Mini One (27,000 miles,1.4 auto 09 reg) and done significant damage. The local garage (non-Mini) has told me that I need a new engine. The car is worth about £5k and the repair quote is £3.5k.

What are the pitfalls in terms of having a new engine fitted and might I be better off just trying to find a dealer who will give me £1.5k for it. Do such dealers exist and do you have any suggestions?

If I have it repaired do I need to tell the DVLA that it has a new engine, and do I need to tell a buyer if I sell privately?

I'd get in touch with a member of www.fer.co.uk and see what they can offer at what price. Timing chains are a problem in this engine, which is actually a Peugeot engine, not a BMW one. But the fact it was fitted to tens of thouands of Citroen C3 and Peugeot 207 makes it more common and cheaper.
