Scraping noise from my Kia Cee'd - what could it be?

I noticed a scratching-scraping noise from the front of my Kia Cee'd, probably nearside. The engine is ticking fine (petrol 1.6) and it only happens in first or second gear (or in reverse) at very low rev, close to or at idle, sometimes when the car is stationary and not in gear. It doesn't happen when I start the car, only after it is driven for a few miles. It only happens for about 20-30 seconds at a time, by the time I open the bonnet it always stops, so I can't see where the noise is coming from. At my local Kia garage the technician didn’t test drive long enough to hear this scratching noise and wasn’t able to help. I hope that your technician Alan will be able to help.

Hello Tom, unfortunately without actually hearing and seeing this problem, it is nearly impossible to help. The only thing we could suggest is that it must be engine related, as you say it happens when the car is stationery and at idle.

Therefore a check on things such as belts (frayed at the edges), any engine covers/manifold covers that have come loose. Air filter area/surrounds.
