What can we do to our Toyota Avensis's pollen filters to prevent hayfever?

We have recently had our car serviced and was told that our pollen filter needed cleaning. My wife has been coughing ever since with hayfever symptoms that disappear when she is outside! Speaking to someone from Toyota, we were told that they should have sprayed the filter with something that stopped the bacteria. Is this true? If so, where can I buy this and how do I use it?

The answer would be to have the pollen filter completely replaced. But they are sometimes quite expensive.
